Project peperami - (A2Steve)

as for the debate 're petrol engined 1.4 .. iv got the 1.6 fsi.. 90tdi .. and 1.4 petrol & my son's got a 1.4 petrol .. the one I've got has leather & oss & u notice the weight..hence not very quick or agile.. my sons Billy basic 1.4 is very sprightly..light & agile .. but non are as quick or as agile as the fsi.. the tdi 90 on the other hand has great torque which gives it almost the feel of an auto with lusty low revs .. but u notice the weight of the engine ..

Totally agree with the above. Loving my TDI90 but I am missing the feel of driving the 1.4 petrol. Test drove a 1.6 but it did not feel much different to the 1.4 petrol I had...perhaps is was just that car or my driving!

My view, based on my experience of owning all models of A2.

The 1.4 petrol is great, switching to it from a diesel meant stalling it a few times due to a drop in low down torque.
But it felt light and nimble and the gear change was hugely better than the diesels I have had. You could change gear with your little finger if you wanted to.
Not the quickest if A2s but still nippy and fun to drive.
The 1.6 petrol has many of the advantages of the 1.4 petrol, but with a significant benefit of it being a little flying machine.
You have to rev it to get the most out of the engine and this is why some people don’t notice much difference between the 1.4 and 1.6 but the difference is huge.
I wa always a bit unsure of owning a 1.6 A2 but if you have a well running, well maintained one they are a joy.
The 1.4TDI amazed me 16 years ago when I bought our first ever A2. It just felt so quick that I simply didn't believe the 0 to 60 figures (and still don’t) it just seems a lot quicker due to the torque of the diesel.
Thst torque has meant that I have never stalled a diesel A2 ever and it is the main advantage.
Also, on today’s crowded roads the diesel A2 is plenty quick enough for modern day traffic and since you don’t have to rev it to get the performance it is great around town.
But then the TDI 90 has all of the benefits of the 75 and even more torque and drive ability.
To me the only difference across all models that sometimes “colours the water” is that the diesels are just unbelievably reliable. As I have said many times, having 7 A2s in the immediate family (all TDIs) has meant that I am never being dragged out to breakdowns or even asked “Dad, or Grandad, I have a problem with my A2” very true.

For me the tdi 90 is my favourite all round A2.
It is a close call between a 75 and a well sorted 1.6, as for the 1.4 petrol, they are exceptionally good around town and are in no way a poor option.

Ok, this sounds like a bit of fence sitting, but all A2s have plenty going for them and choosing which one I like best is like being asked “which is your favourite child!!”

Just my views.

Audi do a stunning Teak Brown. I've an A4 Black Edition in this colour and it is a head turner.

I've a A2 in Castle Red which i also think is a great colour for the car, when its polished nothing comes close to it....

lovely colour. As I am sure all of our Castle Red owners would agree!! It is very similar to that.

Well i've been driving tge 1.4 for about 200 miles now and i'm very relaxed. Its super smooth and there's no point in rwcing it around because you don't get anywhere fast. My tdi140 kept up with a mk1 tt the other night so to me its slow but i see the appeal of the 1.4.

Taking the law of physics and Audi manufacturer data into account, the 1.4 petrol is the most agile (with sports suspension) as the engine weighs less than the 1.6fsi and considerably less than the diesels, hence why our 1.4 is such a delight to drive. The new Goodyear Asymmetric 2's made a big difference to the handling and general feel of the car. Tdi A2's feel so different down to the fact it's a blown engine so feels sprightly/quick with low revs, ultimately deceiving though, when you look at the 0-60 figures. They're king if mpgs are the overall factor when buying. What would be very very interesting, if someone would install the 1.4 petrol Polo turbocharged engine with 148bhp. My neighbour has one and loves it saying it's very quick 0-60 in 7.8 secs yet does 60mpg on a run. I would also love to see a 1.6fsi turbo charged. Anyone? ;)

A good measure of speed, performance and enjoyment would be the power to weight ratio as you say - hence the reason my wife’s old 103hp Smart Fortwo was amazing! Nimble, fast and agile with a real kick. That from a turbocharged 700cc three pot in-line! Imagine what you could do with 1400cc!

I like my diesel for the low down pull - I like the feel of it and the smoothness of gaining speed. A good 0-60 is irrelevant if it’s a frenetic misery like a Fiesta I drove - technically quick but horrible to rev and change quickly when trying to pull out onto a motorway. I’ve never tried a 1.4 petrol A2 but people say it’s fun to drive (unlike Fiestas - Probably just me. ).

Sorry for dribbling on you project thread Steve! You’ll need a summary thread without my nonsense for posterity.

A tdi will always struggle on the 0-60 due to the lag so it may well be slower on the 0-60 but in real life driving a standard tdi would leave a 1.4 standing off a roundabout for example.

Back to Project peppa.....more strip down tonight -)

FULLY agree steve, the 0 - 60 second dash is totally irrelevant on day to day real world driving, the TDI rocks in the real world, that low down grunt still brings a smile to my face 18 months in

Though with only 80bhp in a standard Smart Roadster (previous car), half the sense of speed was just how low you're bum is to the ground! Going faster in the A2 is easier in a straight line but feels slower, though put some twisties in the way and it'd be left in the dust. Both the Roadster and the 1.6FSI A2 both like to rev which I don't mind doing overtaking or pulling out from a slip road - just a different style of driving from torquey diesels.

Yes, I miss my Red Roadster Brabus RCR (number 5 of 50) That was so much fun and as you say your bum is so close to the floor it felt like a go kart.

The Smart cars do have a similar driving / owning pleasure to the A2. Both are full of character.

Seams people still want to chew that fat. There's only one way to settle which will do what and that is to put it to the test. Bring a standard 75bhp tdi cause the 1.4 petrol is offended, like the mule in the 64 film "fist full of dollars" ;)

All said in the best possible taste of course. :)

My A1 is Samoa orange

I think i've had a change of heart on the Ipanema brown. I've sewn photos of it on a VW Jetta and its not good in dim daylight i.e every day in Wales.

Paul or anyone else, do you know the colour code for Samoa Orange?

Hi Steve I said to Paul when he got the Samoa orange A1 what a fabulous colour.. I thinks it’s a very “now” colour & it would be a standout A2 ..
