Searching for a TDi

Thanks! When we visited WOM Rob described one of the forum members as having gone from a top spec A1 to a highly modified A2 - I now know who he was talking about ;-)

Simon.

Indeed.

I wanted a new top spec A2 but since they don't make them any more I had to build my own "new A2".

I LOVE gadgets and I hate seeing a user manual for a car and thinking "no that section doesn't apply because I don't have that option".

And the difference between the A1 and the A2, (in my view, sorry to A1 owners) the A1, even with the spec I had (i.e. everything) just didn't have the character of the A2 and the A1 felt claustrophobic compared to the A2

It is amazing how 'big' they feel on the inside - I think it's the slope of the windscreen with it's lowest edge being so far away.

The A1 is lazy imo - nothing original or clever about it.

Simon.

Robin's S1 is amazing, but the other models in the range lack a bit of "sparkle"

My A1 had internet capabilities, google maps on the sat nav, auto dipping headlights, keyless, BOSE, LED lights etc. etc. But I still get more pleasure from the A2.

I actually looked for a late "special Edition" as I wanted the climate control, not many early cars seemed to have this when I was looking.
The open sky roof always seemed odd to me, having all that weight up there on a lightweight car?

After 7 years of fun, I have been contemplating selling my own 50k mile car recently, but it is not easy finding a suitable replacement!

I find the opposite to be true, cars without Climate Control are in the vast minority, regardless of year.
Not only that but the "Special Edition" cars have a reduced spec, so I find that the earlier cars are often best, but each to their own, there are some greate "Special Editions" around too, with very high spec added..
I deliberately went for a 2003 as the base for "the project" even though there were many 2004/5 cars around at the time.

The OSS is great, the weight makes virtually no difference and all that light is great on a bright day. I even think that the black glass roof looks good.

But thankfully everyone is different and has different views and tastes, so whatever suits you best is fine.

Most of the cars we have looked at (in the flesh or online) have had climate (I think - climate is buttons, non-climate is knobs yes?)

I totally agree with you on the OSS - even if you don't open it the extra light really brightens up the cabin.

Had a good lesson from Tony at A2 Cars today on what Audi did with the run-out cars and the differences between SE and Special Edition.

Simon.

Please tell us more about the differences.

My car was at an independent service garage last week and the guy was getting quite excited over the late version of the engine undertray!

Well I'm only a newbie so could have got this all frac to bunt but this is what I understood from Tony;

Run out cars were called special edition which many confuse with SE (Special Equipment), to make them 'special' they had plastic gear knobs, handbrake covers and steering wheels. Early cars apparently had problems with the anti roll bars which Audi addressed with a new roll bar, run out cars had the old style bar to use up stock and dealers were told to replace them under warranty if owners complained of knocking noises.

Simon.

Some of that sounds like internet myth, my 05 has the later front roll bar and I have no clue if it was changed under warranty or from the factory when built.

Personally, I think Audi had a problem with the A2, or rather their accountants did. They lost money on the cars from the start, so when they needed to sell cars off at the end of production, they needed to make the cars more competitive in the market place by cutting equipment and price and somehow giving the cars the pointless "special edition" name!

We each have our own ideas on the ideal A2. I have run RS Porsche for years and have always enjoyed the design and philosophy. My A2 shares some of this theme, even down to the thinner side window glass and lightweight panels. I changed to pepperpots as they were the lightest 15" wheels I could find!

Each to their own and it's great that we can enjoy these characterful cars!

Could you expand on the thinner glass and lightweight panels - where these custom. Also which pepperpots?

Simon.

Yes - well, apart from the 14" magnesium wheels on the 1.2TDi, but those aren't compatible with the rest of the A2 range

Hi Simon, yes that is correct.
You will find lots of people that think that you can have air con and the round controls but that is wrong.

As you say, round heater controls means NO air con / climate control.
Digital readout and squarish buttons is climate control.

Car picked up this morning - got it home and gave it a wash and polish :)

I'll try and get some pictures tomorrow of the good (bodywork and interior), the bad (worn drivers seat and part working OSS) and the ugly (wheels look like they were dredged up from the North Sea).

But after many years of hankering after one I am finally an A2 owner!

Simon.
