The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

Apologies for all the questions, I haven't picked the pepper pots up yet and need centre caps. Can anyone confirm the size? Seem to be a load on eBay which are 68mm?

Well, I have just got around to changing the 17" alloys on my 1.4TDI Sport for 15" pepperpot alloys and 65 profile tyres (having read about the option on this forum) - what a transformation ! With the 17" alloys and 45 profile tyres the ride was terrible, to the extent that I was always on the lookout for drain covers and potholes (to steer around them). With the smaller wheels and higher profile tyres it is like a different car, so much more comfortable, and the interior isn't being shaken to bits any longer. Best ebay purchase yet :)

After noticing cracks appearing in the sidewall of 2 of my tyres and checking that the tread was getting down to just over 2mm I decided that all 4 tyres needed replacing. Unfortunately 185/50/16's don't exist here so thankfully due to the contributions made to this thread I decided to order 195/50/16 to go on my SE wheels.
I had a choice two only, Budget Evergreen (ex Jinyu) @ E65 ea or Michelin at E200 each.
No contest there as I only do about 4K a year and the heat destroys the tyres here after 6-7 years.

I was a little apprehensive at first as my A2 has standard sport set up and Audi mud flaps.
So fingers crossed and 260 Euros (£206) later any concerns I had have disappeared. They fit fine though I'm glad I didn't consider 205/50/16 as they would have caught on the rear flaps.

Thanks to all that have recommended 195/50's as the ride has improved considerably. Even feels a little nicey bouncy.

The guys at Audi Zentrum Lübeck, Germany, replaced all bolts on my Ronal TT wheels yesterday! They said the original rounded seat bolts were wrong and all TT wheels must have the tapered seat bolts! Weird that nobody said that before, neither at Audi Lübeck, nor at Audi Stavanger!?

By the way, they said these TT wheels are ilegal to use on A2 in Germany!? Are they?

Hi guys. Can i fit on my A2 175/65/R15 tires ?

They give the right rolling radius (within tolerance) You speedo will be slightly affected but your car will be doing 71.5 MPH when with the standard size tyres on it would be doing 70 MPH, but the speedo reads slightly fast anyway and so it will be slightly more accurate.

But I do not know the legal situation in your country.

I use the 175/65R15, they work well, still plenty of room, they also raise the ride height slightly (maybe a cm? I don't recall now) which is of benefit to me since there are loads of potholes / speedbumps here.

They raise the circumference by 2.7% so as Steve says, you need to adjust your speed & distance appropriately.

Gents,

Quick sanity check. I've trauled this thread and I believe my rim and tyre to be correct but will they work together?

Wheel: Audi Speedline 16", et31, pcd100, from mk1 TT that looks like this:

Tyre: 205 50 R16

Will these work together? If not, what width or profile do I need?

Thanks boys!

Hi

to check for tyre compatibility (size wise) it is worth viewing the first post on this wheel and tyre thread.

You can also use one of the calculators on the web such as http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-comparison/

just enter try tyre size 205 40 17 in tyre 1
then your tyre size in tyre 2

you are looking for a difference in diameter of no more than 2.5%. (You might get by with a slightly larger difference but 2.5% is seen as acceptable.

Have a look and you should be able to tell if your tyres will fit or not.
Watch out for the width (I.e the 205 bit). 205 is just the tight width for 7" wide wheels. You coujd get away with 215 just

but the important thing is to use the right profile (the 40 bit) so that the duameter of the tyre is not too tall or too small.

Is there a way to tell which wheel/tyre size combination the car was configured for?

Currently I have 185/50R16 tyres on a 6J wheels. audi.co.uk recommends 195/45 R16 or 205/40 R17.
I'd like to go with 195/50R16. If audi.co.uk recommends 195/45R6, then 195/50 will be a 3.5% increase in diameter, as opposed to only 1.7% for the 185/50.

I am confused, to say the least. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Narrowed the tyres to either Vredestein Sportrac 5 or Falken Ziex ZE-914 Ecorun. I see there is a big divide when it comes to tyres, but I certainly want to move away from 1 Continental, 1 Marshal and 2 Mohawk tyres the previous owner fitted (!)

I rely on the tyre comparison charts as I mentioned above, They will show you the tyre diameter for every combination. If you stick within the 2.5% you should be fine. You can vary that a little but it is a good basic rule to follow.
Since 205 40 17 is an accepted standard size for the A2 I use that as the guide to compare against.
If you run anything with a larger diameter you will find that they are very close to rubbing especially when you have 4 people in the car and go over speed bumps, especially if you also run anything over 215.

q: will a3 225/45/17 fit my A2. can I chang the tyres on the A3 17" alloys to 205/40? if not what should I be looking for?

advice much needed - many thanks

Hi no please don't fit those tyres they will rub and they are the wrong size.

Yes use the 205 40 17s on an A3 (early A3, they must be the same bolt PCD as the A2, later A3s have a different bolt size)
