The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

thank you, I'll check year of the A3.

any suggestions if the PCD is different?

what should I be searching for?

The ideal wheels you want (assuming you want to keep 17") should be

5 x 100mm PCD (the bolt pattern)
35ET (the position of the face that bolts to the hub)
7" or 7.5 " maximum width.
Maximum tyre width 215, but ideally 205 40 17 (for a 7" wide wheel)

The standard 9" 9 spoke alloys that are fitted to the A2 sport models and some early TTs are the right ones, but they are not the strongest wheels and prone to buckling on big potholes (but to me they look the best of all wheels)

Gents,

Quick sanity check. I've trauled this thread and I believe my rim and tyre to be correct but will they work together?

Wheel: Audi Speedline 16", et31, pcd100, from mk1 TT that looks like this:

Tyre: 205 50 R16

Will these work together? If not, what width or profile do I need?

Thanks boys!

James

That's what I use James, winter and summer: RONAL 16inch x 7J x ET31 (Audi Part #8NO601025M) with 205/50/16 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres for summer use and 205/50/16 Vredestein Wintrac Xtream tyres for winter and fitted look like this:

hi Steve B. thank you.

do you think a 2005 reg is an early model? perhaps a possibility as the A2 last model was 2005.

hi Steve B. thank you.

correction.

Yes the 2005 TT wheels should be the same bolt pattern (PCD) 5 x 100 as the A2

The MK2 TT wheels are the wrong PCD for an A2 and the MK2 came along in April 2006.

100% correct Steve B - the wheels I'm using and still think brilliant if not PERFECT for the A2 - our A2 now back on the winters - are indeed the Audi TT 1.8T Roadster items and for us 100% PERFECT for the A2 and anyone wanting to evaluate them for themselves are welcome to visit and do so, no worries.

And I'm just putting a set of FOUR into the sales area...

If they are going to fit what tires to use with dose rims? 195/45R17 or 205/40R17?

Or 205 is the mini for 7.5J?
Yes, you should not go less than 205 for a 7.5 J wheel.

They will fit but will be too stretched and so you will lose grip.

I have 205 40 17s on my wife's A2 with 7.5 J wheels and they are fine, but this would be the minmum width for that width of wheel.

Hi,

These are a couple of shots that show that it fits ok, it does show it being a tiny bit stretched but not excessively and to me, perfectly acceptable. But anything narrower than 205 is too stretched.

Wow it's looking so good.
Are you having a trouble what the tires rubbing in the weak arc?
And my last question is are you with stock suspension?

Thanks, the S3 wheels do fill the arches nicely on the A2.

No rubbing at all either, I have 215s on my car and also no rubbing at all, there is plenty of space in those wheel tubs.

And yes, this is on stock suspension.

I ran 215/40R17 for several years on 7.5Jx17. They are tight with clearance but fit with ET35. Standard suspension or dropped 30mm is also fine and no rubbing problems.
