Timing belt change, anything else?

My car is due it’s third camshaft drive belt / coolant pump change: 14 years old and 151,000 miles; last changed Aug-2013 at 101,000.

It will be going into my regular servicing garage for the work. There are no issues with the car which I am aware of.

I am a complete ignoramus about car mechanicals, electrics, ...

As the cooling system will be drained, and given the area of the engine bay being worked on, wondering if there are any other items which I should be asking the garage to change?

Thank you, Andrew

If you ve got a Tdi it s worth looking at changing the sump chain/tensioner also, there was a thread on here last few days about it breaking on cars with over 100k on the clock I think Sarge has done write up on the subject in "servicing and repairs" as a must do for Tdi owners.

I think that would suggest you do need to change the thermostat.

Simon.

its not too expensive, but i would get one from Audi or VW, one bolt is tricky to get to as there isnt much room, but seeing as you'll open the cooling system anyway doing the water pump, if your in doubt of it you may as well fo it now, save buying coolant again.

Update: service garage did fit a new thermostat when changing the cam belt, et c. Temperature gauge now gets to 90°C in just a few minutes even with aircon

I don’t think that has been changed: I will ask service garage about it.
One problem with a 14 year old, 153,500 mile car is there are probably lots of catastrophe-preventing jobs to do in addition to those outlined in the manufacturer service schedule.
In the same way that the “definitive wheel tyre” thread is ... definitive; it would perhaps be really useful to have a definitive servicing thread, poss one per engine type, for items which the manufacturer didn’t expect to fail, and for those whose components have failed, the age and mileage at which they did.
I’m not meaning things which fail from neglect, but things like the suspension arms: mine are still original and I ask for them to be checked every time the car is serviced.
If people think it is a good idea, I could set one up and maintain the first post as the thread gets responses. Maybe there is already one at the German forum and all I need do is use a translation website to read it

I bought this bad boy Febi chain kit problem I have now is getting someone to fit it locally without removal of both my legs as payment.

I've even chatted with WOM if I take a long trip down but they are a but reluctant to promise a quick turnaround given they haven't really changed one yet.

That’s the kit I brought and fit. All OEM with the VAG numbers removed.

Timing belt was done last year but given I dont now trust the garage that did the work (very dishonest outfit) I'd probably just do it again if I'm honest.

How long did it take you?

Allow a day
+ new crankseal advisable while there
the one we did was a result of chain failure at 122k came to me as non runner so bit more involved
