Today I say goodbye to my first A2. She’s been amazing, 7 years of ownership, and each time I drove her it was never boring.
At the same time I had @timmus dropping by to transplant my MFSW from my old A2 to the new one. As expected it was a true privilege and honour to see Timmus at work. So here it is, a mini, improvised gathering of past, present and future in one spot.

Today I drove 20 miles in my A2.

Doesn't sound that special does it but my engine has been almost completely stripped with only the crank untouched and rebuilt with a new cylinder head and piston, new rings and journal bearings fitted along with a reconditioned turbo. I've done a few modifications along the way to improve the air flow and can feel that it just wants to rev but for the time being I have to drive it with restraint - low revs and highish boost to bed the rings in for the next 500miles.

I could not have completed this work without the help of Gary Wilson (Jigsaw) - he has been a tower of strength with gentle guidance when I didn't know what to do and absolutely infallible knowledge of the A2 in terms of the order of doings things, what fastener goes where and how the loom and pipework should be routed - I owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

Simon.
excellent news, watch out for those heater plugs

Today I had a visit from Tom @timmus, to fit cruise, komfortblinker and lumbar wiring to Doodlebug. In the course of this he also removed a dodgy live feed from the ignition left over from a previous non-OEM radio install, rectified the wiring back to OEM standard, and showed me where to fit and how to use a Connects-2 unit that I'll be receiving shortly (thanks again @Muska :)).

Tom then investigated an issue I'm having with the climate control. He ended up swapping out the circuit boards from my current climate unit, which turned out not to be talking properly to his laptop. These were replaced with the internals from my original unit, which was behaving itself but had a bad fascia and casing ... which also involved retaining the current unit's display screen since the old one was pixellated. The end diagnosis is that it's showing an over-pressure situation and shutting the compressor down, so given that it was working OK until Friday, possibly the pressure sensor is now dodgy.

Having met Tom previously I already knew how enjoyable it is to spend time in his company, with his huge knowledge of everything A2, and his interesting and witty conversation on that and many other topics. Now I've seen the man at work, I can only reiterate what many other people have said: Tom's work is detailed and meticulous, no corners cut, not a single thing not done completely and properly. He even very kindly found a couple of screws for the steering column shroud that I was missing. I have also noticed that its flexible top section is now fitted flush to the dash, where it hadn't even occurred to me that it was previously not fastened properly at one side. I know I'm not alone when I say that I can't recommend Tom and his work highly enough.

So, I'm now enjoying my newly retrofitted features, they've definitely made a difference. But even better, when Tom removed the bonnet, he told me straight away that I have heated washers and hence (if still the originals) heated mirrors too. Having only had the car since the warm spell at the end of April, I had no idea about either of those!

I wasn't aware Tom was round this way?

I'd been in contact with Tom for a couple of months regarding yesterday's work, so managed to get on this week's retrofitting tour. He's on his way to Dover today for a few weeks working around Benelux. If you PM him you might catch him on the way back in late August if you're lucky.

Thanks Ian, good you managed to get some work done, it's always a pleasure having Tom around. I'm not sure i'll be able to do late August as we're away that last week hence why we're unable to attend Steves one day Welsh run.

Today ......

MY A2 chorus unit starting developing an appetite for cassette tapes.!

So anyone got a working mint condition unit with code ..... just PM me please as I'm quite enjoying listening to them ?

...fitted a new EGR valve.
Pottering round North Wales between Llandudno and Ysbyty Gwynedd to see my son obviously didn't suit my A2 as I was getting the EML flashing away every time I stopped at lights or a junction with a really rough idle, plus fuel consumption had rocketed.
A quick scan with VCDS showed insufficient flow through the EGR valve, so a new one bought, fitted and it's like a new car.
Much more responsive, fuel consumption is already markedly improved, and the idle is now as smooth as silk.
