Today I.....

No I haven’t do I need VCDS to do that? My generic code reader obviously hasn’t picked anything up, but for £10 I wouldn’t expect it to
You will certainly need a better code reader to read and reset the Airbag lights, VCDS even the free version will happily do so, there will be other as well, however the generic ELM... code reads are unlikely to be able to connect to the Airbag control unit

Today I took Vera into a local garage to get a loud humming front offside bearing fixed. Turns out that the CV joint is threaded and the nut can't be tightened properly . This is probably how the bearing came to be worn in the first place so correct torque settings are a must.

Yesterday gave a lift to some friends (150 mile round trip). At one point after accelerating on exiting a roundabout one of them says "that engine got some punch and sounds throaty, is it a 6 cylinder?" "No" I replied, "just a 3 pot 1.4" ;) (OK, it's remapped!) I then went on to tell him about the A2.

Not too sure if he is into cars, by co-incidence both passengers were cycling enthusiasts - so I made sure to give plenty of room to cyclist on the road.

Today I changed the engine coolant sensor and the thermostat, only had to remove the drive belt tensor , alternator, expansion vessel, oil cooler flow and return and the inlet steel pipe work , it’s easy they said ...

On the plus side cleaned 14 years worth of rubbish from the expansion vessel and total flushed the cooling circuit

Ordered replacement intercooler pipe rubber mounting thingy and nuts

Why does one job lead to more ?

not sure why you had to remove all of that stuff, I've done load of tdi thermostats and coolant temp sensors, I only remove the serpentine belt and alternator, to ease access to the lower thermostat bolt

I was unable to get the coolant sensor clip back into place/sit right , the flow and return pipe clips to the oil cooler was in the way , to prevent the start the clip back into housing , so to get to the clips a load of stuff need to get out off the way
Do this before on a 75 tdi and it was much easier , not sure why this time it was a pig !!!

Maybe I've just got compact hands, but I was able to do the Tdi thermostat without removing anything barring the engine cover and boost pipe, and the coolant sensor was also a case of engine cover, undoing boost pipe and the bolt holding the small loom carrier in front of the sensor, and using my 90 degree-bend pliers to remove the clip as I couldn't get a fishing line loop behind the clip no-matter how hard I tried. Sensor was rotated the wrong way to access the socket-release clip with a screwdriver, so I pulled it out in one still plugged in, removed the o-ring from the housing by fingertip, unplugged the old one and and then put the replacement in, rotated so the cable clip was accessible this time and pushed the clip home. Re-connected the plug and put the other parts back on. I lost more coolant than probably ideal due to ineptitude at the first attempts, but I'd be happy doing either job again.

To day I was much more successful!!

Replaced failed dog bone bush, using a Polo part , engine now stays in the engine bag when starting
Replaced both rear shocks, and bump stops , along with the shields for bilstens B4
Replace missing wheel arch fixing
Replace fuel filter drain nut with rather nice item from Paul
Replaced roll bar bushes at the front
Replaced oil and filter
Flushed coolant and replaced
Replaced air filter
Replaced pollen filter
Fitted my new rear mud flaps
And finally retapped the under-tray,to chassis legs fixing which had been attacked by ham fisted meat head
Notice oil leak from underside of turbo ... any clues

You're lucky you had the weather to polish anything, I had planned on removing the Votex from the 1.6Fsi I bought this week but it's been pouring down all day

Yesterday I refurbished my newly acquired 15" A1 alloys (thanks @rosscanning), they were not bad, but each one had a mark and therefore a refurb was in order.
Rub down, stoppered up, primed and sprayed in Avus silver then 4 coats of 2K lacquer.
And today I fitted a set of new 195/55 x 15 tyres to them and bolted them onto my TDI75
not a bad weekends work, considering I also refurbed a set of mini wheels to keep wiffy happy

I also tinted the headlights (nicked this idea from @A2Steve), I think they look much nicer against the silver bodywork
A2 also got a new MOT on Friday, no advisories, but I did get a comment about the auto headlight switch not having a rear fog light warning light, but as the fog light worked OK he was happy. Smoke test 0.18 which I was over the moon with, this was running my AMF remap and was not particularly hot when he did the smoke test. The limit for pre 2008 diesels is 3.5 unless they can find the manufactures plate, which he couldn't

There was a retest in just before me, a 14 plate BMW 330 (I think) it was meant to get 0.6 to the plate or 0.75 if the plate can't be found, it was 0.9, so owner had been sold a can of fuel cleaner and told to go rag it down the motorway in third for 20 miles or so, he did blackpool to preston and back twice, it was stinking hot when it came in for the retest and still the best he could get was 0.82, so still a fail - the look on his face when my 17 year old A2 TDI was FAR better on the smoke test than his beemer was priceless, and that is without a particular filter and adblue
Made me chuckle to myself. The MOT tester said the BMW's always struggle to make the smoke test.
