Today I.....

Finally got round to a considered attempt at removing my "volume fault" radio and replacing. It was well and truly stuck due to the catch on one side being turned inside out. As per the guides on here I pulled the lower cubby, popped out the climate control panel (surprisingly easy) and then could put some pressure on from behind the stereo. Out it popped! HOORAY.

As well as the fault there was some very iffy wiring for a long gone sub-woofer under the seat that I traced back to a phono converter under the steering wheel trim. It was rather poorly taped to the supply/speakers so now thats gone and the cars a kilo lighter and less likley to randomly catch fire. Now I have a usable stereo and can listen to the Disney compilation TAPE I found in the Christmas decorations box (really)

The replacement has mild pixilation so im probably going to take it apart and see if I can face swap it with the old one that was fine, Christmas holls project.
Evening,

I wrote a VERY detailed guide on stripping a Concert II head unit to replace worn soft touch buttons from a donor unit, not quite what you will be doing but near enough to if you want some background before you start. I don't think you will need it, it is written for the timid inexperienced member but probably worth reading.

Hey @2work posting that under my post about fitting a Tape player is a bit harsh dont you think!

(ps looks a cool project, impressive stuff)
Reading your later post I now realise you are dealing with a tape player and my previous post might not be as useful, sorry.

You should have bought a Concert II, it will work in a 2001 car = play music/radio but will not fully integrated = for example not illuminate at night with headlight switch but can be fully integrated with a little tweek.

Good luck with the display transplant from the old unit I magine there are millions of tiny solder joints, it would be interesting to hear about.

Oops,

Sorry about that. I didn’t even check to see what had been posted above before I made the new firmware announcement.

Yes it is very very impressive indeed. Lucky for us there are some rather clever RNS-E enthusiasts about who are happy to share their findings which are mostly free of charge.

I too had a Chorus tape head unit for a few years before finding a bargain RNS-E Mk1 unit. It performed brilliantly

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I...

Well literally minutes ago I got in from work and went back out to Project OEM to test the new Splash Screen function on the new latest RNS-E PCBBC firmware.

This is just a couple of minutes work getting the image to the correct dimensions and pixels. I’ll get more imaginative in the coming days, but my RNS-E now presents me with this upon the key going in the ignition:

I’ll try an actual photograph of my A2 next but home renovations tasks are waiting so I’ll do this another time.

Kind regards,

Tom

Oooh. Me like!!!

Oh for a blank CD....
This new firmware does look to be great and I really like the new features.

I think I’ve made my mind up that Project 250 now needs a DD Dashboard ready to receive a RNS-E PU.

If only I didn’t given a dash away a few months ago!

Kind regards,

Tom

This is fantastic.

Reckon I’ll need this in my life too

Today I... had the best drive since the pandemic started.'

Had a trip up in the mountains nearby my area. it's a 2h drive. It was an hour after midnight, temperature had dropped from 3-4 degC yesterday, down to -2 degC around midnight and rhyme on the road gave very unusual driving conditions, grip was amazing and with the white snow all over the illumination from long beams were brilliant too....

Grip was amazing, alone on the road, BHC engine likes the cold air with 100% humidity, the crisp snow keeps elk and dear off the road...

What a drive :) I love my A2 ??

Today I got my car back after a failed MOT a couple of days ago. ?

It failed on a fractured rear coil spring... not something that was evident whilst driving or even from the ride height however in the week up to the MOT I could rear a ‘twang’ noise from the rear on the odd speed hump which I didn’t have time to get checked before the MOT. 17 years on the original rear coil springs is a long time so was only a matter of time especially as the picture shows corrosion in the middle too. The fracture looks like it might have happened sometime ago as a fracture in my mind would result in a clean break but there was no evidence of this in driving, I’ve only done 241 miles in the the last 3 months so quite possible it happened before the evidenced twang noises.

Two other things came up, a loose headlight switch which he clipped back in (it wasn’t loose and marking this was IMHO is over zealous) and ‘brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule’.

Now back to rude health, no rear twang although a slight increasing in rear ride height which will no doubt settle over time. I’ll have a look at the corrosion to ferrule when the weather gets better and all is good.

Today I remembered some garages are a joke.

I knew I had a brake line leak. The leak was found by the garage but they said it was impossible to source the seal. So it would cost me £250 for a new brake caliper.

I refused.

I found the leak, I replaced the compression washer.

I got the item from europarts for 69p.

Back on the road all is well

But really? £250 when the part is easily found and is generic. They told me they called Audi and even Audi said to them you have to buy the full caliper. All lies for sure.

It's a shame these businesses still exist. Being fair and honest with customers generate return visits so it's not really in their interests to tell porkies. Murdo will be able to perhaps help with reliable garage services in and around the Glasgow area.

Today I staretd work on the "death pipe" leak, pulled off the coolant resevoir, egr pipe and gear shifter links and then had to do an errand. Parts are still in Germany so "no rush" and its fiddly as hell so im just going to do it bit by bit when I can gab some time.
