Today I.....

Today I fitted new batteries to my Crystal A2 and to my Volvo C70.

The A2 was done in under 15mins, including shaping the edges of the cover for the positive terminal supplied with the battery, to suit the hardware found around it on the A2. Oh, and resyncing the keys and resetting the clock and the windows too. OK I already had the spare wheel off and the false floor out, but they're only seconds each. It's also nice and easy to get at the lower hold-down bolts with the BOSE subwoofer in the back, but it wouldn't be too bad even if it still had the tools there.

On the Volvo? Removed the entire strut brace in order to access the battery box. Barely room to get at anything around the battery box but had to unclip various cables and hardware from its outside in order to get at its lower front clip. Moved the front half of the battery box out of the way as far as possible to get at the second nut for the hold-down strap. Very difficult to reach this with fingertips to remove and refit/start on the thread, and heaven help me if I'd dropped it! :oops:. Took me 40-45 minutes all told. If I had to do it again, some time would come off that, but is this really what 10 years of 'progress' in the automotive world has achieved?

Always simpler the older you go for the hoke mechanics amongst us. That's part of the draw, respect of the engineering and love of of all the jobs to do!!

Hi, had the car a year now, so did a full service & a few other things .... Undertray off, checking for leaks etc.... found all inner cv to gbox flange bolts were finger tight (= loose plus !) & slight oil leak from a sump screw. Exhaust looks fine (phew) & arb links have no play st all.
Changed air, oil, cabin & fuel filters, new dog bone, new front discs & pads, alternator ( @A2Steve ) & drive belt. Should be ready for the good weather we are promised.
Looking to do a mid year engine removal to do the death pipe, thermostat, cam belt & water pump, plus manifold flaps clean up & full engine bay clean up .... just seems easier to do a front panel off removal to get all those things sorted, but time will tell !!
Hope then to be good for the next few years of happy motoring.

Doing it right! Hope it goes well, great approach and the car will be great for years for sure.

Lucky you don't have a car with a smart battery management system. On my Q3 you have to code the new battery to the car using VCDS. Apparently, as the battery performance degrades over time the charging process changes to match. If it's not reset, the alternator continues to charge at the reduced rate, adversely affecting performance and life of the new battery

My neighbour had that on his '60-plate Range Rover. You couldn't even get the battery out without a 5-point Torx security bit to take the covers off! My Volvo is about 2 years newer than that, but the last of a design going back to 2006, rather than the start of the new model as his RR was.
 
Ran out of fuel in my 1.2 ?

The little monkey decided to tell me I had 150 miles left (I knew I didn’t as I’d just got to 700 miles and 113mpg is too much to even dream of even for a 1.2!!!) having said it was pretty much empty when I parked at work. Sadly on starting the 4 mile potter to the nearest petrol station it died on me!!

Cutting a long story short, a colleague ran me down to the petrol station, i bought 5 litres added it to the tank and using the @froggy (from a post in 2011 apparently borrowed from an earlier @skipton post) foot to the floor on the accelerator and crank it like crazy, it fired up within 10 seconds.

I count this a near miss and will simply re fuel after 650 miles moving forward!!!

A2's are great little machines & deserve to be kept going for as long as the law makers will allow us to use them. All my friends are amazed at how much room & load capacity the car has & an FSI is suprisingly nippy as well.

You'll notice e some people won't like to admit they're great, but you can tell everyone does. ?
 
Today I... Picked up a set of almost perfect 15" pepper pots with mint centre caps and (cheapy) tyres with 7mm of tread!! I had to drive 400 miles for the courtesy mind but always a pleasure in an A2. Will pop some photos on after I've got them balanced and fitted.

Looking forward to joing the pepperpot club!

No, the standard 16" SE wheels. The previous owner tried to paint a couple of them with an aerosol can and made a bit of a mess of it. My local wheel refurbisher charges £70 per wheel so I thought rather than pay that I'd look out for some pepper pots as I like the style and you get the added bonus of the weight loss. Didn't think I'd find a set so cheap (I paid £80 all in) and in such good condition but very happy that I have!
