Today I.....

Ah but then when do you fill up once the bong has sounded? It’s been proven you can comfortably go many miles beyond 0 miles’ range - so 700 miles is not going to be a problem, but will your nerve hold Erling?
In Tonka I know where I stand. Sadly the 1.2 conked out a few months ago with 10 miles still left on the DIS and 658 miles for the tank. Tbf I think this has been a economically consumed tank at a better time of of year for parsimonious consumption but, none the less, I’m cautions. Especially with the my wife onboard with a hangover 😵

Interesting picture ..

So things looked promising for the magic 700 at the 500 mile point

However after the first leg of a 180 mile round trip to a wedding things look less positive now

Plus my wife got very cross with me when I referred to the ‘additional ballast’ as potentially being a contributing factor 😬 It’s about 90 miles to get home so the return journey with a sore head in the morning could be interesting!!!
Well progress has been made. This is the 600 mile point which was shortly after joining the M6 this morning (wife took the pic)

And this was when we stopped for lunch 5 miles from home.

I no have to decide if I give in and fill up before heading home or brave the traffic on my 30 mile run to work in the morning in the hope of achieving my goal 😬

If I assume that I do achieve it and used 35 litres of fuel that will 96.54 per 3 Litres, not far off the 3L 100km claim. 🤞

Assume for my money - you’ve proved your argument.

You’re sucking up dregs from the bottom of the tank now and also if you do run dry, I’ve heard diesels can be temperamental come restart.

Refill now. Much cheaper than having a tow truck. Not to mention the chance you are now causing damage to the car. There is now very little fuel in the system, more contaminates blocking up the filter or getting into the tandem causing increased wear. The lift pump is now working very hard and running hot. The lack of fuel quantity also means the fuel is now hot as not enough to get cooled by the fuel cooler.

Now you have done this replace your fuel filter.

Audi fit low fuel warning lights for a reason, push your luck and expect short term and long term wallet damage...

All fuel is sucked from the bottom so its the floaters that are the issue lol!

As already mentioned the lower the fuel level the hotter the fuel gets and the higher the risk of component wear, not something i would like to dice with, full to refuel warning is my method and my figure i try to beat which is 375 but no tank venting so around 25 litres (obvs mines a TDI75 AMF)

It is the water in the bottom of the tank that will contain most of the contaminates, the lack of fuel now returning to the tank is agitating this layer and greatly increasing the likely hood of the lift pump drawing it in and pumping it into the filter or tandem pump.

Another negative from this is if you do breakdown due to running out of fuel you can be prosecuted for it as you already knew you were low on fuel before or during your journey.

Fuel figures from the manufacturers are worked out under ideal laboratory conditions of temperature, air pressure, humidity, vehicle weight including zero contents and a computer to operate the car. You have people worn components and the element to contend with.

Just stuck fuel in my big car, now hit £1.73.9 for diesel here. The sooner I get my A2 on the road the better. The A2 can do the work commute then.
Sadly "cheapest" i saw last week was £1.71.9 almost got excited but then realised the half a tank i had would suffice (mk2 galaxy)

I reckon, without luggages and travellingng on your own, less weight-less fuel, that 700miles is actually achiveable. Very interesting and fantastic result, from a 20 years old car that is almost unbelievable!
The A2 design was way ahead of it's time.

I doubt manufactures did their fuel consumption test over a complete fuel tank, more likely over a set value for miles / kilometers then multiplied to get theoretical range.

Just filled 2 of my cars. £1.58.9 for the petrol and £1.72.9 for the diesel. Now balance is swinging in favour of the petrol car despite the worse fuel consumption.

I’m 100% certain your correct. I didn’t set out to do it on this tank. I didn’t actually consider it until I got to the 1/2 tank stage. I’m likely heading up to the borders to see some friends solo in a couple or months so maybe I’ll have another go then.

When Rover did fuel tests at our test track in Leyland they would remove the brake pads / shoes and tape up between gaps in the bonnet etc.
What dieselgate? 😂

washed the A2, brought it back onto the road again (man, I love being able to do this electronically!), drove it around some - we had some stuff to do so used that instead. Everything seems pretty good, especially with the reindeer skin removed and the OSS open :)

Got my A2 insured, a brilliant black 2002 TDI 75 with neptune blue cloth seats. It's been sat there about a month while i've done a few little jobs on it. I've got a set of alloys on their way in the next couple of days and then i'll start using it for work. I couldn't justify using the 2 tonne wagon doing 30 odd mpg to take me to work any longer at today's fuel prices.
