Today I.....

Keep the faith Malcy....she's worth the effort. 👍

I know she is 😁. Just going to show her a bit of mechanical sympathy until we know what’s going on. And I’m fairly sure that when the time comes to replace her (that was another thread) it‘ll be with another A2, and it would have to be a really good one at that.

They know when you're eye is about wander you know.

Removed the headlining today. I took some pics an could do a how to for non experts like me. Taking out the central light unit I noticed how hot the interior lights get when the doors have just been open for a few minutes - finger burning! I think I will source some LED lights. They look like the same bulbs as the number plates (straight sausage shaped). Any recommendations?

Good stuff Alan, look forward to a guide on this work and the led replacements.

Today stripped the headlining material from the biscuit. Centre panel was well stuck but the foam came off with the material, mostly. Maybe it would have lasted another 10 years - who knows.

Outer panel, most of the glue was there but got soft with some surface cleaner and came off fairly easily but messy. That left the crack between the outer and centre panel which was full of the centre panel glue. It was really hard to shift and after 2 hours I've done half with flecks sticking to the outer panel :(

The guys who are going to do the work spotted there is a slight difference in the centre and outer panels colour (I think it is the pattern that's different that reflects the light differently). I offered to fill the crack so they could use a single sheet of material but they said "No", they will cover separately. Good luck to them trying to get the material into the crack.

Those that say they can clean a headliner biscuit in 1 hour are either dead lucky with the glue or they have very slow running clocks ;)

Today I changed a worn button on my Chorus using @Andrew 's excellent guide. I added a comment re the slight difference for a Chorus and the photos of the radio removal tool and Torx screwdriver set I used.

It's more of aesthetics as I rarely used the radio. Does anyone know if the TP function is still supported in this age of satnav on every phone? In the past I found it irritating that the stations were slow to turn off TP - probably deliberate.

Now in need to do the recirculating button on the CC. Has anyone a decent button? Probably as rare as hen's teeth!

PS That's so called invisible tape protecting the button. That button is the one I use the most, otherwise it is left on Auto.
PS Pretty good for 18 years old
You only had to ask.

Soft touch, not bad condition, yours for the cost of postage, PM me

Today finished cleaning all the glue and foam from the groove (hands still hurt). Still the old spec at the bottom but that should be OK so long as it is not disturbed. Then wiped down with IPA whilst wearing a carbon filtered mask. Once again testing the patience of my other half as the biscuit spends another night at the dinning room table!

Looking very clean. Look forward to a thread start to finish? 🤔

Had a spare 4/5 hours so decided to change the coolant in the A2 tdi. Took ages to get all the air bubbles out of system Why did i think it was a good idea to do it myself!

Today the EML came on, hasn't showed up for a few months I almost missed it :/ now with:
"16786 Egr system, excessive flow."

I can't see any leak or wire damages, so I assume EGR is the issue. I changed it to a used one around 3 years ago, to fix similar issue, so probably it's faulty and stuck open/close. It drives normal, no limp mode, but soon I need to drive hundreds of miles on a week, so this needs sorting.

Only thing is, that the EGR dump pipe is broken into half years ago, so it just sits on top of thermostat housing now. I was told it doesn't matter, and it hasn't caused any issue, so I assume that's fine.

Eurocarparts.com sells 3 different EGRs
the top style looks like for 1.4 AUA, bottom one with L dump connector might be for later models, but still it's between £120-160. That's sounds a bit too much.

Has anyone got experience with one of the eBay ones? Some are £30 which probably way too low to work properly. Cheers

Today we went around the Vintage car rally in Stanley Park Blackpool. Not every car was a vintage and not an A2 anywhere or parked up on the way in.

Today I went to Capesthorne Hall classic car show . I was asked on entry if I was showing or parking my A2. Went for parking as it was a bit grubby and in need of some work to get it up to scratch. Saw a blue FSI in the show area but missed seeing the owner .nice tidy car . With colour matched interior . Was it you ?
Pretty good show lots of different stuff cars and some unusual motorbikes . Including one that I think is a 1.4tdi steampunk bike .
Good day out .
