Today I.....

Today I noticed that 'Gertrude' is not running at her normal temperature in these cold winter conditions.
The image was taken after ~ 18miles of mixed driving between urban roads and A roads.

It took an extra mile along my normal route for the temp gauge to kick into life but it didn't get close to 90°C.
My perception is that the cabin heating kicks in around the same time the dial starts to move off the 60 mark.

Another observation is that the manual gear change is really stiff, particularly into 2nd, until the car has warmed up.

How is everyone else enjoying driving their A2 in these cold conditions ?

I've experienced similar on my 1.4 petrol, after some drive the temp normally moves between 85-90C, now its 75-85C.
In both situations only steady on 90C when the car is stationary. The undertray is off so that might cool it too. The thermostat probably stuck a bit open, hence not staying 90C even in warm weather, but the freezing cold has definitely affected that.

My TDI eventually warms up to 80 degrees or more in those conditions and hence the needle sits at 90. I think your thermostat or possibly the sender is starting to fail.

It was nice and warm where you were! Try -11.5°C this morning round my way 🥶

The 1.4TDI is so efficient that it produces very little heat on its own. This makes it very slow to warm up when it's cold outside, sometimes it never even gets to 90°. The AMF engine was fitted with a Webasto pre-heater until about mid-2002 that warms the coolant and hence both the cabin and the engine. Later AMFs, and all BHCs and ATLs, have just an electric heater for the cabin instead, leaving the engine to fend for itself for coolant temperature.

When the outside temperature is +8°, which is just above the cut-in point for the Webasto on mine, it can take 20 miles of mixed driving on my commute to get to 90° on the gauge. Once there it stays there, but I suspect it would never manage it in these temperatures without the Webasto. This morning I did have to sit in a queue for a little while before the thermostat had opened and even with the Webasto running it dropped from about 85° to about 70°C on the temp gauge. I believe in the operational specs for the Webasto, one of the parameters that have to be fulfilled for it to turn off is that the engine is at least 70°C. Presumably it can't guarantee to output any more than that in the coldest of conditions.

My normally rock steady tdi 75 Tonka gravitates between 86-91C (I can be exact as have colour DIS) when up to temperature and Is normally up to temperature within 5 miles or so. When under constant load (up hills or being driven quickly- mainly the former!) over the last few days it’s behaved as normal, but otherwise it’s been stopping down to 60-70 for much of the time.

So today I upgraded my wheels and tyres for the amulet red A2, so that’s the remap done, 6 speed NTG gearbox done, ambient roof lighting too heated seats next I’ve built one seat onto the drivers side next cant believe how this little car makes me smile so much.

Wow! What a shine on your car. Is that original paintwork?

My 1.4 petrol is also taking longer to get up to 90C and fuel economy is down by c20%

Mine has been struggling to get up to temp on my morning commute this week - temps of -6C, heater working hard and slower speeds have all slowed warm up, so one morning it never quite got to 90! I did wonder if the thermostat might be going, but on reflection think it's just the weather!

Well if your normal fuel consumption is > 60 mpg and you regularily see a vertical needle temp reading i'm wandering if there is something slightly adrift with my thermostat.

In normal weather conditions my best MPG is around 55MPG and the temp needle normally tops out around 85°C.

RE Temps
I've been letting the glow plug warming light go off before cranking this week !

Start temperatures in the morning have ranged from around -4°C to - 7°C

Being impatient and cranking before the glow plug light goes out will test just how much life your battery has left !

Today was my first drive with my driveshafts replaced. I bought them a while ago but it was never a priority, then of course the shudder under acceleration was getting worse so I just put it in to the local garage. If only I'd done it months ago and have the pleasure of a more relaxed commute.
The weather's been wintery so a normally fairly shiny car is looking rather unloved so once the outside tap thaws out I'll give it a quick wash.

I have exact spec car inside and out, red with akoya. Nice one

When I was at the Scottish social event in June there was another which was the same. I did have black leather but swapped and really like it. I have the A6 armrest which is black. I thought about changing it to red but think it breaks it up a bit.
I still keep an eye out for the red door cards

Today I…..
Put the A2 on the ramp and gave it a once over.
Very pleased over all with the condition.
Noticed a twisted brake hose, removed it from the calliper and routed it correctly.
Took the opportunity to remove the callipers, wind the pistons back and clean/ lubricate accordingly. Bleed the system.
- Ran a full diagnostic scan.
- Replaced the fuel filter
- spark plugs
- 2 coil packs.
- annoying bulb failure light rectified (not a blown bulb but nearly blown brake light.
- removed the n/s headlight and cleaned the earth cable.

One thing I noticed that I could do with some help on, there is an oil trap/ PCV type thing on the back of the engine block that is a bit oily, I cleaned it up and it looks to be leaking from the seam. Any idea on a parts number ?

I imagine it will be different depending on which engine type you have but for a 1.4 AUA petrol I think it is 036103464G

Good video from @mtl

As BirtyA2 has mentioned, that's the oil separator. I'd changed mine few months ago, it was full of yellow gunk, oil+water mixture, due that, it was rather heavy as well. With undertray and car on ramps, it was not too difficult to change it, just make sure to unplug/remove the bits connected to the oil separator hose first, and one of the bolts sits higher, so you need the sqeeze your hand a bit. Also check/clean the rubber hose connected to it, as on mine that was full of the yellow gunk as well.

Ah I'm lucky enough to have the full monty, sport wheel handbrake gear knob gaiter and doorcards! I will try and make social event in 23

I have a grey and red gear gaiters which matches the red and grey headlining but I've not gotten round to doing something with it. I bought an A1 sline gear knob since it's got the A1 steering wheel.
One day I'll be In a place to call it finished..
