Today I.....

Amen to that! I've been thinking the exact same for a while. Some of them are no better than twinkling fairy lights. Even the ones like a ring with the side/brake lights inside them aren't great, when the inside is lit it's hard to see the outer ring flashing until you're quite close - possibly too close.
Completely agree, I find it really difficult to see Mini‘s (BMW version) with the halo running light and halo indicators on a bright sunny day

My Son's Audi A3 Hybrid, has had three gearboxes to clear a fault, (that's triggers a dash warnings), but the fault persists. The change gearbox instructions came from Audi Germany based on a scan, (🤔).

Many headlights are now shaped so far around into the wings that it's difficult to see them indicating when head on. It makes you wonder how they pass the regulations.
And why do most Fords dazzle you with their headlights as though they are preset too high or to the middle of the road, more winter observations.

I hope Audi are picking up the bill for that little lot. 3 gearboxes and three lots of labour to change. Who ha sir that is sounding like a 5 digit bill at the Audi parts prices and main deal labour costs

Today I completed the rear PDC retrofit on my Crystal TDI daily driver. It's only been 2 years since I first got the ball rolling! I was very lucky to obtain the rear bumper shell with the holes and sensor holders in the correct colour from @2work - thank you Tom :) I immediately bought the sensors, external wiring loom, control box, sounder and some paint & lacquer. I then did nothing with any of them! (Apart from glueing one of the holders back on, the wrong way round as it turns out). I finally got round to painting the sensors and @timmus kindly supplied and fitted the internal wiring loom, both during his recent residency here. Then on testing out, of course we found one of the sensors was dead . We re-glued the errant holder and fitted the bumper in the rain on Friday, leaving the dead sensor in the middle left position, which is accessible with just the top black panel unclipped from the bumper. Another sensor was immediately ordered from eBay, which arrived this morning and has now been tested, sprayed up and fitted within 2 hours!

Today I've tried if my bike fits A2...fits perfect

It's a lease car, and under warranty. Searching forums, seems the fault is not unknown on other models also. New windscreen too, thought it was down to the camera, but no.
So, maybe the Chinese software Gurus, (are there such beings as Gurus in China?), will sort it out. Puts an FSI into perspective doesn't it.

Thank God for that
Long live the ‘simple A2’
40 years ago it was rust and rot that put cars in scrap yards now it’s electric issues
They are more mobile computers these days than cars
As an example what the hell was wrong with a hand brake being operated by a cable worked well for the last 100 years. Then some electronic guru decides that a ‘better’ solution is a switch, wire and motor actuator on the rear brakes.
Not to mention the throttle cable being replaced with potentiometer wire and a motor unit on the throttle body with yet another potentiometer on the throttle body so the ecu knows what position the motor moves too
This was all done with a piece of push bike cable and a spring pre the electronics gurus getting their hands on it

It’s the same on all modern cars. Ecu after ecu
We will get to the point of needing an ecu to tell the lower level ecu what to do
I actually like to drive my car not feel like I’m a passenger in a mobile computer

Keep It Simple Stupid, that and work to the lowest common denominator seems to give a very reliable and easy to understand way to work.

Afternoon Ian,

Glad you have finally got that retrofit sorted Sir. It’s been some time! I had that bumper in the garage for quite some time and very happy it’s been useful. It came from an A2 in the breakers yard near my work, where I removed my first double DIN dashboard and Rear PDC kit.

I really like the addition of the Rear PDC and even more so with the OPS display on the RNS-E PU - Not far off having it also displayed on the ColorMFA screen but have slowed that task now I have my hands on a 3DColorMFD.

Kind regards,

Tom

I'll have to pass on the OPS display, my RNSE is a 192

Hi Ian,

I know of 2x RNS-E PU head units that might well be available in the coming months if the R8 RNS-E project works out. They’re both fully ready to go as they’re in the fleet right now.

Let me know if you’re after one and I’ll drop one off when passing LB Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

Always something new, my daughter brought over her iPad with a jigsaw on it.
Who's is it though?

Non A2 content but today I was reminded of just how high quality Shell’s V-Power diesel is!

I’ve had an intermittent problem on my 2.0 diesel current-shape Touran where the EML has been coming on. My trusted mechanic read the codes and informed me the EGR valve is sticking shut, probably due to being sooted up. For the last month the light has been on constantly - indicating the intermittent problem had turned into a permanent issue.

For context, since I got the car I’ve run it over the last 40k miles on the cheapest fuel I can find dosed with the Millers additive - so I was surprised until I thought about it - I’m sure the Millers does what it’s supposed to (keeping my fuel system clean), but it can’t reduce the soot content of diesel can it? This then covers the inlet via the EGR and gums the latter up I suppose.

I decided to try V-Power as a last ditch attempt to solve the issue without having to pay for the EGR to be removed and cleaned, due to it being the only forecourt fuel that has a component made from gas (gas to liquid) and therefore it burns cleaner with greatly reduced soot I believe. It also contains all the cleaning additives and increased cetane that the Millers provides so no need to use that anymore when filling up. It does cost a few £ more per tank of course but when staring down the barrel of a big bill, one sometimes has to make a call as to where to spend extra money.

Well here I am half-way through the 2nd tankful having driven the car fully loaded (family of 5 on board, top box + bike rack on the tow bar) down French autoroutes to the Loire Valley at 70-80mph - with oil temps touching 105-110 degrees at times - and what do you know? This morning we got in it to visit an attraction and the EML went out as it should.

I’m a convert! From now on, as it’s proven to be sensitive to fuel quality and I want to avoid the garage bill, I’ll only run the Touran on this stuff whenever possible and use the Shell app / points to lessen the sting of the extra cost. @PlasticMac will approve I’m sure. Audrey is happy with the status quo (cheapest fuel - usually either supermarket or sometimes Texaco - dosed with the Millers and is giving me mid 60s mpg tank averages with mixed driving, so no need to do the same there.

Probably a good long hot run will have done it the world of good on any fuel ⛽

Yes you’re right, but I should mention it does get regular long journeys, both to Exeter and back (45 mins each way, weekly) and to my parents’ (3h each way, every 3-5 weeks), plus assorted other ad-hoc journeys mixed in with local short trips like daily school run duties, so whilst not quite on a par with the French run, the EML problem might not be down to usage on short journeys.
