Today I.....

Today I was excited to see boxes from Autodoc for some stuff ordered over two weeks ago.
Then checking the order find the front shocks are being sent in another delivery.
Much as I like their app for ease of ordering the delivery process is very frustrating.

Morning all,

Today I… Received a parcel from @davjan (David thank you so much for your recent offering in the Market Forum) which brought a massive smile to my face.

What was included was a full set of sealed Votex fitting instructions:

Nice to have some original literature for the history of the the fleet. More importantly was the other items in the package.

From the top working down:

2x plastic inserts for the rear valance
Correct oval towing eye cover
4x factory primed jacking point covers
Extended towing eye bar
4x spacers

All items are new old stock and never before fitted, very very happy with this delivery and purchase. Pretty certain that these items will be happy to finally see the light of day on a certain Jaipur Red A2.

Super chuffed. Have a great day all.

Kind regards,

Tom

I’m laid up while recovering from a knee op and have been having some very interesting conversations with some friends. We were looking at what might be difficult to procure for our aluminium friends in the future. @audifan came up with fuel filter housings.
I had never considered something as mundane as a fuel filter housing to be an upcoming issue but I’d simplistically think that there’s a lot of PDs out there. The Fabia 1.9 has a fuel filter in the engine compartment with three ports. That would be my first thought. It’s a great idea to start looking at these things now before there’s a real problem.
As a real fan of Tdi 90s I’m looking at Tdi 90 turbos, there’s been a shortage of the turbo esp the VNT. Last year I had a 90’off the road for 6 weeks because of this. This year I’m looking at another option, as I’ve got another 90 needing a turbo. The problem is that the hot side of the 90 turbo is formed in the manifold so getting an alternative turbo isn’t so straightforward as if the turbo bolted on. The 1.2 Tdi exhaust manifold fits the 1.4s and has a bolt on turbo and there’s a huge variety of turbos that bolt on. The 1.2 manifold isn’t that common but it’s identical in the main to a lot of 1.9tdi manifolds which can be used by cutting off one branch and blanking it. I got an 1.2 manifold easy enough though. Onwards and upwards.

The A2 diesel fuel filter housing has 4 ports. Fuel in, fuel to tandem, fuel return to tank and fuel cooler. The older canister type was effectively 3 ports with the third port containing the thermo valve for the fuel cooler. This was effectively a "T" piece so the four lines were still fitted. If a replacement housing could be found it would still be easier to fit this in the rear location by the fuel tank. This would save the problem of extended fuel lines to the engine bay.. Many later housings have done away with the third port and temp valve presumably because fuel coolers are not applicable to those vehicles.

Hopefully Audi Tradition will see a need for these genuine plastic housings and make a fresh batch to keep the cars on the road.

Bob Hope and no hope of that happening Graham
Audi tradition are there to hold existing stock until it is all sold or scrapped there is no chance of them getting new stock of a part that was A2 specific
We got to face it we have what we have got already no new stock will be arriving

AT actually recommission various A2 bits viz the foglight surrounds now available.IMG_1027.png

Having just spent some time with a plastic fuel filter housing my previous conclusion about the thermo valve being deleted now looks to be wrong. Indeed it looks like the thermo valve is now integrated into the housing ( circular block with the pipes ). The diesel gets very hot in use and without the fuel cooler the heat would be an issue to the plastics and rubber components. As I am struggling to find any suitable alternative filter / housing I really hope Audi Tradition will remake them.

Well, Today was fuel filter change day on my Tdi90, I’d done it a few years ago with the correct tools so didn’t expect any problems, but today had issues, not with the drain plug but the 27mm plastic’nut’ to undo the 25Nm I’d tightened it to previously.

To my horror it slipped, the nut seemed to have been rounded by previous use of the wrong tool, even though I’d got it off last time with a 27mm socket. My guard is missing so perhaps weathering hasn’t helped also.

After pondering it for a while, I looked at the 2 lugs on the filter top and wondered what I could use on those.
I decided on trying the Cam hold tool I’d bought for cambelt changes, and using the small pegs I never thought I’d use. It worked brilliantly, the 2 small pegs latched perfectly into the 2 lugs and I was able to change the filter without further issue.

I clamped only the fuel in pipe, and drained about the contents of the canister before it stopped dripping.

I’ve said this a few times before. When undoing these plastic parts with hexagons ALWAYS use a 6 point socket and NEVER a 12 point socket
The 12 point will round the plastic corners in the blink of an eye

This allows to the fuel filter cap and the oil filter cap on the A2

Yes, I specifically bought the right size 6 point sockets for both oil and fuel before attempting either on both my A2’s, because as you say, once it’s chewed up, thats it!.
Unfortunately both my cars were bought over 150K and other people have been at them before 😢

Yes that is unfortunately the problem, damage caused by other spanner monkeys before you got it

drove the 545 miles from our house near Dundee to the moors outside Plymouth (returning Sunday before 10am).. and somehow bought a complete A2 Bose kit including loom en route. @timmus - hope this is one that you can undertake when you're back in terra cognita a few months from now and everything is mutually convenient. My dolphin grey A2 is needing the Bose, some lock fettling, and hopefully a DAB installation (as well as some persuasion to make the diversity units / bootlid aerials functional).

No work as such, but a couple of parcels arrived

http://www.posi-products.com/instructions1.html So I can re-wire in my tow bar electrics. Not a lover of scotch locks.
&
New coolant temperature sensor with the hope it cures my temperamental temperature gauge (more n/w than working)
I have tried to find a used detachable tow bar (complete with electrics) Any idea where to get one? I am living in Sweden and it is impossible to get hold on one here.

All understood. :)

It appears that, upon my return to the UK, I’m going to be busy.
