Today I.....

Today I changed the other right side track rod end. Also patched up the stone guard - will schedule changing next spring. Drives a little stiff when turning but keeps a straight line with the steering wheel centred.

On putting back the wheel noticed a bright screw in the tyre so will now have to get that fixed and might as well have the alignment check, although I feel I got it right. Will move the fixed tyre to the rear. And when I get home check the tyre pressures as often it's wrong, sometimes way out.

Today I, received my order for this weeks project, front suspension replacement.

Bilstein B4
Napa springs (happy to have SE, as soft as possible).
Meyle droplinks
Febi mount bearings.
and new pinch bolts.

I have had passenger side off already, so apart from certain destruction of the old droplinks, that should be easy.
What fun for the drivers side.....although that has already been done at some stage, so perhaps will come apart easier, once the resevoir business is dealt with.

Thanks for all the prior posts. Great resource and advice from you all.

Cheers

Matt
Good luck!

I did this job a couple of weekends ago - just give yourself loads of time, and you'll be alright :D

Today I continued the epic of deadlocked door that has been going on for a pair of weeks already (front passenger this time). Finally received the new door control module, and connected it using the narrow opening between the door card and the door itself.

The door is still deadlocked though, but I got the electricity back in it, so there is at least hope that it may occasionally unlock itself on its own (like the rear door did).

Today I, installed my new Matrix Platinum Grey Sports front seats. What a difference!
Alas they are still damp from a deep clean, but will now look forward to my next long drive.
The requirement for 12v for the electric lumbar adjustment instigated the installation of a sub-fuse box. Ideal for the other extras I have bodged (until now). Amp, Sub woofer, PDC power, and also 2 more available fuses. All mounted in the passenger footwell.

Much better than hitching onto other sources, and now everything is loomed up and earthed properly.

Fortunately arrived today as rescheduled to fit new rubber on a set of wheels I’ve had in storage for quite some time:

You’ll notice that I’ve finally collected the OSF jacking point cover from the painter

Think I like these quite a lot and will be sticking with them for some time. I’ll add more pictures to the Project thread shortly.

Edit: A few more picture here:

Kind regards,

Tom

I’m glad you kept those wheels Tom, they really suit Jaipur red. Funny how some wheels suit some car colours. Nice

Today I, completed the first front strut and spring replacement (with appropriate parts).

One aspect was a nightmare, that being getting the strut out of the hub, and worse, the new one back in......

The old strut was the original. An oil one, which had exploded recently, with the oil all over the place. Thus, the clamp was rather tight......

To get the old strut out of the hub, I intially tried a bit of leverage, but gave up and had to use the 'apply hammer' technique.

I was not really comfortable with that, but it worked. I had tried to ply open the clamp with various tools, but could not get any decent purchase with anything, including various bits on the end of my 1/2 drive.

Getting the new one in was even more difficult, even with lubrication etc. I had to resort to the hammer again, but hammering upwards is much less effective.
Over (a lot) of time, it worked, and apart from this aspect, all the bits and pieces were as per many posts here (thanks all for your input).

I was fortunate with the band that holds the ABS cable, as this came off and back on ok, as it was not too corroded.

The new droplinks (and any other bolt I come across) have nylon dome nuts on them.

This is to try and avoid future corrosion. I am not sure how long they will stay on for, but they are tight, and seal well, so if they don't get knocked off, they should protect well.

I have already purchased one of these strut spreaders off eBay for less than £10. Hopfully that will make the next one a little easier.....

....and the difference between a stuffed old shock with original springs, and Bilstein B4's and new springs is just amazing. Off for a drive now!

Cheers all.

Well, it wasn't today but the other day.
Left my house at 6am in Surrey (Warlingham) and went to take back a clutch to Rimmer Brothers for my Rover 800 Coupe I bought back in Feb this year, but olnly fitted in July - Wrong one....
The Red Arrows home is nearby at RAF Waddington, so had a stop off as they were practicing.
Then went to see a friend in Doncaster I made when I went to a very good (and very Famous) friends funeral earlier this year. Spent some time there, then came back via another Rover 800 owner in Lakenheath to pick up some stuff, then back home.

470 miles in all.
Longest I have driven my A2 since owning it.
A)It is now an absolute pleasure to drive now it has no wheel bearing noise.
However...
B) It is not as pleasurable to drive as the 800 long distance. I have struggled to get my seat position correct since I have had the A2. The seat squab doesn't come far enough forward, or correct angle for me and I find the back of my legs needing more support. Anyone else have this? I'm not overly tall, 5'10"

Still a good drive though.

Get some sport seats instead of the SE seats. Much better. Ideally with lumbar adjustment and heated if you want little luxury

I have the half leather/Suede sport seats in my car already, with manual lumbar adjustment.

That's a job well done. I just changed by tie rod ends. I was planning to just replace the rubber bushes but the threads on the tie rod ends were corroded and had to be Dremelled off, hense new tie rod ends. I didn't think about buying the domes. I made some of myself: wrapped plastic tape around the thread and crimped the excess at the top, then pushed on a bit of 1/2 hose and then filled the hole with hot stick glue. But I think I will buy some of those domes. There needs to be enough thread inside to reach the nut.

Edit: Just looked on ebay and the some M12 dome nuts are 1.75 pitch (most don't give the pitch). I thought tie rod threads were 1.5 pitch. Anyone know for sure?

Following finding a small screw in a front tyre but no apparent air loss, today I swapped both fronts and rears. The rears now have more tread anyway. Also painted some more rusty bits with my favourite Kurust and spray painted matt black the temporary mend patch on the stone guard. MOT soon due and hopefully wont be spotted. I've cleaned and polished the inside of the wheels so the tester is distracted seeing himself reflected ;)

Whilst underneath I noticed the steel Assembly Carrier has surface rust. So I painted that with Kurust. Next spring I will wire brush, treat and paint. Actually, about 10 to 15 years ago I bought a Assembly Carrier off ebay that was near perfect but to put that on means the consoles, wishbones and more need to come off and that probably means new bushes. Has anyone changed their console carrier?
