Yesterday collected my TDi75 from WOM who managed to fit an EXB gearbox from a Polo. The car needed a new clutch (original one lasted 237,000 miles, not bad) so with the gearbox off this seemed like a worthwhile experiment. Gearing is all about 10% taller, so 60mph is now at 2,000 rpm instead of 2,200 rpm. Hopefully a small improvement in mpg. Nearly a straight swap, only a small amount of work to make it fit.
Being aluminium is the problem the thread strips easy both mine stripped and I was really careful.£300? Wow. Why not buy used seeing as they are aluminium anyway?

They're all about 10% taller. It's noticeable in first (don't think I'd dare go up Wrynose Pass which is a 30% gradient), and fifth is more relaxing - overall it's an improvement for everyday driving.Hmmm, what are the ratios like on this box then?

Yes, the gaps between the gears all feel about the same. I did consider just a taller 5th on the existing box, but I thought it might result in having to stay in 4th longer so no great advantage. 6 speed is still the best option I'd say.Is the spacing similar to the original? I have a gearbox ready with a .659 5th gear, but am a bit concerned it might be a bit of a jump.
I was planning on swapping the front slam panel and bumper today but due to the rain its just the bonnet
Ha ha - Hope that didn't take too long to swap
On Friday I had a mammoth drive planned to collect parts that you lovely members had been storing for me over the last couple of months. Here was my journey:
Started from work after night shift at Sunderland 6:30am to meet up with BoxyA2 at Derby for 9:30 with some rear electric red door cards. Then on to Fallan’s house at Coventry shortly after to collect rear pdc bumper, by this point I was quite happy A2 running great traffic was surprising calm for a Friday until I turned onto M25 wow, a whole new level of busy! Anyhow onto Kleynie’s for seats. Next stop was Norwich to see DarkHorse for winter tyres, first time here it’s a lovely place. Whilst I was in Norwich I picked up a lovely kit in matching LY7R! car is filled to the brim by this point with seats, rear bumper, kit and four tyres. Finally my last stop was home (couldn’t wait) which I arrived at 9pm! What a journey of 720miles all in my trusted tdi l. At one point I was averaging 76mpg but driving home fuelled with McDonald’s and some R&B that fell to 65mpg can’t grumble in a 15year old car with a hurt clutch.
I want to say a big thank you to you guys @BoxyA2, @Fallan, @Kleynie, @DarkHorse and partners who help me to piece this trip together and a shame I couldn’t meet some of you personally.
With me working night shift I had been awake since 5pm Thursday, feel like I’ve caught up on sleep now..
Thanks again and if I can help you guys down south with parts up here I will.
Ross
