Today I.....

Hello,

finally I could find a light control in good condition (for lhd cars).

I also bought a new headlight for the passenger (old had broken supports) and did a little polishing and homemade lacquering on the driver's side. I think the change is very good.

And next to another of my cars, which is 33 years old.

Today I took a definite goodbye to my beloved ATL.
A year ago I was involved in a car accident, the impact was big on the A2.
Bracket for airco compressor and generator was cracked in pieces, gearbox mounts where sheared off and the front beams, part of the shell where cracked.
Took off a lot of parts, and now the rest is going to be scrapped.
Tried to sell and give away free/cheap parts on the Dutch forum, but unfortunately there's a different mindset on A2's..... Well it's the way it is.

Saw this as well ..perfect for making up my 4ft hoops ? I’ve got an old euro pallet and with 3m galvanised electrical conduit (£7) easy job will try and get some conduit in the next couple of weeks ..easy enough in a workshop ..but at home I was wondering it’s just a simple former ...purrrrfect ?

Received the email from Admiral saying they are refunding £25 per car I have insured with them as a gesture because people can't drive as much at the moment. As my renewal had only been £262 in total for both A2s, I'm well chuffed at having £50 coming back to me

I had the same email for my new to me A5 tdi Cab only paid £194 for its insurance so rather happy with £25 back. Not bad to insure a £14k car
I must now be officially and old git

I did think that there had to be a benefit of being over 50 with nearly 35 years no claims bonus ?. The scary thing is that it doesn't actually seem that long ago that I was excited at becoming 26 as I knew insurance started to get cheaper at that point.

LOL. Yes I totally agree. From my early twenties I was mapping out what car to have next and a lot was to do with insurance costs
I worked my way through an Audi 80 Quattro,a coupe Quattro turbo and a 911 turbo between 25 and 32 not to mention a triumph stag that I restored and kept for 21 years
I do fondly remember buying a lancia beta coupe when I was 19 (yes I new they rotted before your eyes and when you got where you were going you walked around the car to ensure it had all arrived) it cost me nearly twice as much to insure it than I paid for it
My god was it quick though, it would monster the then king of the road 2.8i Capri both in terms of speed and handling

The 911 was likely the best sports car I have ever owned but it tried to kill me once too many times in the wet winter. You would find your self pirouetting down the road at the slightest provocation in the wet. In the dry it was a totally different car well mannered and great fun to drive and the noise of the flat 6 was ssssoooooo nice, only bettered by the burble of the triumph stags 3.0litre V8

Fond memories

Paul

This old picture I just put on my I pad was my first turbo 1987 plenty of earlier 911s it was a left hand drive previously owned by a wealthy German race team owner ..breathed on by RUF .350 bhp..wish in some ways I still had it but as Paul says the early turbos were raw ..an animal that if you didn’t respect it would have you over the hedge before you could correct ..dark green ..it spat out a real growl and pop ..it’s still owned by the same guy I sold it to .,worth now probably 4 times what I sold it for ..although our present one is so much easier to drive and not likely to kill me any time soon the 4 wheel drive made a huge difference..as well as modern driver aids ...the secret on the early ones was not bottling out and taking your foot off the gas once you commit on a corner follow it through easier said than done at times ?

"All dressed up and nowhere to go"

My insurance is due and as I have Agreed Value option I need to provide 7 photos: 4 outside, mileage, front seats & dash and engine compartment. So it's an annual spur for a deep clean: wash. clay, wax (including the difficult bits on the door jabs), windows cleaned, x-rain front and back, inside vacuum and all plastic trim cleaned, headlights T-cut and UV protection. The hardest part is getting the black door cards looking half decent.

Still need to do the rubbers (waiting 303 Rubber Seal Protectant - trying this instead of Gummi Pflege as I found the foam applicator didn't last long) and take the wheels off and do behind (some tar damage from council resurfacing which I managed to get compensation). I might later shampoo the seats and carpets though I always use 2 layers of mats (Audi mats and cheap ones).

I always think the engine bay photo is a bit pointless when the engine has a cover but I do clean what is visible. Maybe one day I might pamper the engine with a steam clean!

May I ask which insurance you’re with? I’m shopping around for agreed value insurers... thanks

Just had a phone call from Tracker, the first in 15 years, asking if I still had the car. Caller didn't seem surprised when I said yes, though I said it was nice to know they still existed! I thought afterwards that I should of asked if they could test it still worked, but I don't know if that is possible. Website https://www.tracker.co.uk/ says it uses VHF frequencies and is fitted to 1700 Police vehicles, Police helicopters and at ports.

I thought I had the cheaper version where I had to alert them the vehicle was stolen and then they would activate the search, but this doesn't seem to match the current offerings and I see that they no longer offer a single premium cover for life of ownership. They now want about £361 one off + £180 pa for cover.

My car was fitted with the Tracker by the dealer - it was a so called demo car - and I paid a one off transfer fee to cover me for as long as I had the vehicle. I paid £355 which works out at £24 pa so far. As they become rarer they might become more desirable to nick!

I decided to clean my EGR valve today. I was surprised it wasn't more gummed up after 150k miles:

IMG_20200425_162905127-01.jpeg

A cut down 6mm Allen key was essential to get the EGR pipe off and a long 5mm one made removing the valve easier, but it was still a bit hard working behind the engine. At least I know it's clean now, even if it didn't really need doing!
