Today I.....

Today I went and collected the Pine green, It has a few niggles but nothing too serious that I shouldn't be able to sort out myself, It does need a good clean inside and out that alone will take years off the car lol I just need to figure out a name for this project ?

Methuselah, the worlds oldest pine tree ?
I think Methuselah is a great name! The Methuselah pine is currently estimated to be 4,851 years old. If @ICowie's latest A2 is still running in the year 6871, I'll eat my hat. Now there's a risk-free bet. :p

I was thinking Project Putt putt cuz you should two putt on a green ?
Careful, or you'll start to associate your car with St Andrews, and, as a Fife boy, you'll have mixed feelings about that!

...finally got round to having a new head unit installed. For anybody considering something similar, I hope you find this useful. Although my RNS-E paired with standard 8 speaker system delivered excellent sound quality, I missed not being able to navigate using google maps displayed on a decent size screen, and similarly having Spotify properly integrated into the head unit, and for this reason something like xcarlink wasn’t really what I wanted, and I was prepared to sacrifice a proper OEM look for this.

Shortly before lockdown (seemed like an eternity ago) I’d bought a new Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB at a reasonably knock down price off eBay (£280... costs £390 from Halfords). This seemed to be pretty much the standard modestly priced HU which supported not just DAB and Bluetooth, but Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also, after a bit of a struggle, I found an installer willing to fit it for a reasonable price, Bannings in Guildford. Got a couple of outrageous quotes from other outfits. After discussing with a few knowledgeable types on the forum I decided that the wiring job was going to be well beyond my limited skills. I also found out that there was no suitable off-the-shelf adaptor and fascia surround, the supplied cage would not fit. At this point @depronman kindly offered to make up a 3D-printed mounting kit (some plastic mouldings designed to screw onto the sides of the HU) and a bespoke-fit fascia surround. I bit his hand off at the offer.

Lockdown happened just at the wrong time and my booking to have the HU fitted was postponed. In the meantime I did a test fit to make sure the mounting kit and fascia surround fitted, which indeed they did (@depronman didn’t have the exact spec for this HU but had made up a mounting kit for another pioneer HU previously and mercifully it worked). I took it upon myself to cover the fascia surround in matt black self adhesive plastic film (£4 from B&Q), thought it gave it a very nice finish which blended well with the surrounding panels and even gave a bit of a soft touch finish.

Bannings reopened last week and so i got the installation done this morning. My first impressions are very positive indeed. Sound quality is at least on a par with the RNS-E, possibly better, and all the features I wanted seem to work very well, though I think I still need to work out the ideal brightness/contrast settings for the screen. Spotify is not only supported by Android Auto/CarPlay, but by a built in app on the HU which works pretty well. The installation looks very tidy, the DAB aerial is tucked away on the near side A-pillar, the microphone is just above the rear view mirror, and the USB connector comes out in the tray in front of the gear lever.

Ok so this exercise hasn’t exactly been cheap (about £450 all-in, minus what I can recoup on the RNS-E, which will be for sale here soon) but I’ve got what I wanted out of it so very happy. Just a couple of minor niggles, the steering wheel controls no longer function - Bannings said it wasn’t possible to integrate them - and I’ve lost the track readout at the top of DIS, it’s also a slight pity that there’s only one USB port on the HU, it would have been nice to have a flash drive permanently connected, but that would have required a more expensive HU. But this has been vastly more successful than a very expensive aftermarket stereo installation I had done on our VW camper van last year, so I’m very relieved. Here’s some pics...

Quinus? Only because the Latin for pine is Pinus. Ps. Methusela is a great name but up here it would get shortened to meth, not so good.

@bphull possible RNSE for sale?

@bphull possible RNSE for sale?

I’m not 100% sure on the ability to get the directions into the DIS screen this may beyond the cars ability to integrate the pioneer HU
But getting the multi function buttons to work should be very possible
I have the resistor values for the pioneer external Remote control unit
With these I have done two thinks with mine
1 was to make a left hand side binnacle to control the HU this as volume up and down track up down mode and radio station up down
It works incredibly well
2 was to use the dis stalk to control the volume up down and mute. This as also worked very well but will be removed shortly as I am retro fitting DIS to my A2 and as such I need the stalk to do its intended functions

The pioneer remote is a jack plug on one end like an audio pair of head phones from the three contacts a switch with a resistor value is wired up. This then controls various functions depending on resistor value
There are about 12 functions but I settled on the important ones and designed the binnacle around this many switches
I find the touch screen great when stopped but a little useless when moving and a physical button is far better when on the move
Voice control
For the day nav is hit and mis so I normally type in the post code but this is down stationary so ok on the touch screen
I also find the sound quality to be on par if not a little better than the concert HU

Cheers. Paul

Fixed my fathers A2 no-start issue, thanks to all the info on here.

He has a 2004 TDI 90, recently had a couple of instances where it wouldn't start (not even attempt to turn over). These have be one-offs where if he attempted again it started ok.

2 days ago it wouldn't start at all even with multiple attempts. So I told him to charge the battery, try again and try a different key. He tried that yesterday, still no attempt to turnover. So from the info on here it sounded like a supply or earth issue to the starter - potentially the earth behind passenger headlight.

I used my project A2 to gather the tools necessary, identify the earth lead and starter and called over to his.
  • Visual inspection of battery, battery terminals etc all good.
  • I tried to start it, no immobiliser symbol on dash, keeping the key in the start position and wiggling still no start.
  • Turned lights on and attempted again - lights dimmed.
  • Visual inspection and pull/ wiggle of his earth lead behind the headlight looks really good, but still no start.
  • Attached jump lead to starter motor body and another bold in engine bay that looked to be attached to chassis.
    • This time the car turner over... slowly, improvement so probably the earth lead.
  • Removed earth lead (headlight point only), cleaned it and the attachment point up with wire brush and wet/dry sandpaper then rubbed down with contact cleaner.
  • Reassembled and car started fine on multiple attempts.
Plan to do the starter end of the earth at the next service as well.

Thanks folks for the wealth of info on here - really helped in getting this one up and running quickly.

John

had a 6 speed box from a 2014 1.6TDI A3 dropped off. fingers crossed this one works out better than the MYP I got a few months back. Just waiting on new engine mounts before we tackle the install next week!

Interesting, what’s the gearbox code? Is there any difference in ratios?
