Today I.....

Moved house this week. The brilliant A2 TDi 90 dragged a 750kg trailer filled with household necessities (including the Triumph Street Triple) from Suffolk to Lunigiana in northern Tuscany in 22 hours’ driving plus an overnight stop. It seemed to be more bothered by headwinds than by gradients; it glided up the slope to the Mont Blanc tunnel without a whisper, but would struggle much above 60mph into a headwind. It all went a bit Pete Tong in the last 50m of the road up to our new house: it’s so steep that the car lost traction and didn’t make it all the way. I parked it where it gave up with maximum handbrake and in 1st gear, got out to get assistance from the landlord in his Defender only to see the car inch back down the slope, turning the engine over as it went. Had to hop back in smartish to apply foot brake. Managed to chock the whole shebang, detach the trailer, reattach it to said Defender and make it the last few metres. Planning to bring it back to the UK at some point because a RHD car here isn’t ideal, but given everything, who can say when that will be. Photo shows the A2 land train plus wife’s Mini waiting at the Tunnel on Wednesday morning. The car is long overdue a wash; it has most of Cumbria all over it from moving my wife out of her student accommodation in Ousby the previous week

Today I... completed a transport mission with my A2 and the new towbar :)
Another passion I have is granite. Another hobby is to build a cabin. I needed some granite some work on the outdoor areas. It's a 3h travel from the cabin area to the granite supplier. My A2 can tow 1000kg. Trailer weighs in at 160kg stripped. So I got the mining guys to make pairs og blocks weighing as close to 890kg as possible... (nose weight 50kg) I have for six days transported six loads of granite. All well until the crane operator told me that his crane dyno was showing 7200kg... not 6000kg as expected... (6x900kg =5400kg+600kg container=6000kg)
Seems like I have been 200kg/20% overloaded on every trip I made...

Please take learning from my mistake

Today I... finally got round to adding the finishes touches to the new look interior of my Tdi, vacuumed out the interior added blue edged mats as acquired from Ian @Proghound, having already fitted seats and door cards supplied by him. Doorcards kindly fitted by Tom @2work last week.
Leather steering wheel and gear knob also recently fitted and very happy with the overall result.
Tomorrow, weather permitting pepperpots to be fitted and it will be all shiny and ready for MOT on Monday, fingers crossed.

Looks great, glad you like them Mandy :) Good luck with the MOT.

Excellent; every household needs a Street Triple!

So Today ...

Or rather last weekend , managed to get round to replacing the duff cup holder in the offsprings car , excuse the hamfisted efforts but I was a finger down ....

I also managed to recorded the whole process , and upload it to YouTube, hopefully others will find this useful

Thank you so much for posting this this is a great help to me and I guess many others. Like always once you've done it you kind of know how to do it next time! I've just subscribed to your YouTube channel just in case you upload any more

Today had an MOT and it failed! Deteriorated OSF brake hose. Fair enough given the car is 16 years old, but a bit miffed it was not an advisory at the last MOT 2,400 miles ago. Booked it in for Thursday to have both done and a brake fluid change as that is due. Apparently the parts are not in stock locally and have to be obtained from Audi (Germany?).

I'm now beginning to wonder what else is going to fail on age, such as brake cylinder or master cylinder seals? Does one wait for an MOT and a potential failure and "black mark" or say these things should be changed after say 10 years. I've never had a car as old as my A2 because in the old days cars were a heap of rust after 10 or so years!.

Also the disks had an advisory: pitted, worn or scored. Lots of wear left on the pads still, so I was surprised. They are 10 years old and 35,000 miles ago when the car had done 53,500 miles. They were Mintex disks & pads recommended by this forum, but that is less life than the original Audi disks and pads.

Finally, they noticed that the headlight top mount has broken yet again! Feels like they are getting picky - maybe they need to gets some income in after the earlier shutdown ;)

When having the MOT I asked the garage to photo the console but I must of used the wrong term. I meant the steel bit but they photo'ed the aluminium bits but did manage to get a bit of the steel section. So I joined 2 photos together:

Not as much rust as the rear, and less than I guessed there would be, but at some point will need refurbishing. Actually, many years ago I bought one off the 'bay. It's packed away but I recall it had no rust at all. So no cost for the part but an arm and a leg to replace ;)

Unfortunately, the front of my A2 will not go up my ramps, otherwise I would give it some anti-rust treatment. If I took off the front bumper then maybe it will go up!

At this age a brake system overhaul is probably due. Both front and rear, all flexi pipes and possibly some of the rigids, rear cylinders and perhaps front calipers, I would only do the master cylinder if I thought it had problems. Do not forget to bleed the clutch slave at the same time as the brake fluid flush.
Why will the front of your car not go up on ramps? My Votex car goes up. You could place 2 pieces of wood or plastic about 25mm thick in front of the ramps to give initial higher clearance.

It looks you have casted wishbones, so you wont have to worry about structural corrosion ?. Is this the 2004 car in your profile? Would indicate they have been exchanged before.

I replaced the pressed steel for cast/forged in 2018 or 2019 following the extensive discussion (18 pages!) on this forum
