Trouble with remote keys

Ifyou can list the colours of most of the wires that go to the red connector, I'll look at the circuit schematic, to see what they do. I'd like to know this before doing anything.
If that checks out OK, I'd then go for minimal disturbance of the OEM wiring.
Dissconect the car's battery.
Any tracker wires that connect to the tracker with a connector, should be unplugged, (and insulated if there are exposed contacts).
Any wires that connect to the battery are likely to have a female spade connector, which can be removed from the two, (+ & -), male spades on the battery, and insulated.
If any tracker wires remain, cut and insulate them.
The tracker and the battery should now be able to be removed.
Lastly, plug the red connector back into the CCU.
Now reconnect the battery🤞
Mac.

It's Plug 2, which seems to be power outputs to locks, interior lights, and lots of other things.
No inputs, that I can see, only outputs.
I'm surprised that anything works with it out!
If I'm right, it's safe to plug it back in, following the steps I describe above.
The only mystery, to me, is why it was disconnected.
When you remove the tracker stuff, look to see if any of the tracker wires go to the back of Plug 2.

Cheers!
Sounds like a plan. Hopefully it will stop raining long enough for me to have a go at this...

Attached a couple of photos of the (quite a few) wires attached to the red plug. Does this help?

Hi, yes that confirms that they are all outputs, to locks, filler cap release, interior lights etc. So as long as the battery is dissconected, you'll be fine.
You will, hopefully, find things work better once it back together.
I can't figure why it was unplugged though.
If you go for disconnecting the tracker and battery by then unplugging, rather than cutting, you can decide how much tidying up to do later. 🤞.

I think the tracker and the removed connector are not connected, (Christmas pun).
My guess would be that the connector has been removed to conceal lock/microswitch, or CCU issues.
The tracker, and it's battery, are just redundant.

Hi @PlasticMac - you are correct, the tracker and the red plug are separate issues. I've now removed the tracker (cut the wires and insulated the ends).
It looked worse than it was: the wires were taped on in two places, but only connected in one place.
There's a very long coiled up cable with 3 plugs, looks like 2 audio and a multiplug, maybe for a cd changer? Nothing to do with tracker.
I also removed the CCU and reconnected the red plug. (Ignition off). No ill effects so far. Remote fobs still not playing the game yet.

That's good. Does the fuel cap release, and interior lights behave, including the boot light?
If you can find anyone local ish with VCDS, check if any remotes are allocated to the CCU.
You've checked the batteries in the remote ...
Mac.

Fuel cap wouldn't release before, so I'm wary about closing it. Be happier if I knew I could open it again..
Fob batteries are new.

It would probably be helpful to get a scan, just to give you a picture of what needs fixing.

I have an odb2 to usb cable, thinking of whacking vcds lite on a spare laptop and giving that a whirl.. would that work?

Almost certainly, in my opinion. The important thing is to get the right driver for the USB to Serial cable, and install that driver, before plugging the cable in for the first time. Good luck.

Not sure, but may be, if you leave the cap open, but press the release button, you may hear the release solenoid click.
Does anyone know please?
If so, you're OK to close it. You can use the emergency release, behind the boot trim, if all else fails.

Damn. I went kkl because I'd read somewhere that can was only for later cars (mine is 2001). It was only cheap though. So I can easily buy the other one as well..

Google for kolimer and you will find the software you need.

He is the one... Good bless him! Ok

Or buy a full set including the cable on Ali.

:)

Once you have it up and running,

Use VCDS > comfort control unit and select number 7 in the measurement value blocks. Now press a button on the Fob. If the value in field 2 ("radio remote control command") changes, this means that the FFB is compatible with the comfort control unit and should be able to be learned to it. To do that, you probably need a log in code, but that's a different story.
