Today I.....

Today I did a little butchery on the Storm  ... ... no, nothing bad at all!

I've had a set of S3 Recaro front seats in it since December and the only thing I didn't like about them was that I couldn't fit the black end-caps back on the rear mounting points, because the positions of the seat rails are different with all the bracketry that was involved. That and the holes in the carpet over the box section under the front where the rails of the A2's own seats went. In both places this left ugly metal bits exposed which are normally hidden away, and the car being the colour it is, they were very obvious in the dark interior!

So I finally unearthed a spare set of end-caps from my parts hoard and had a look to see what bits I might have to cut off them - as it turns out, not nearly as much as I had been thinking. For the inside ones, it was just a strip just under the top face on one side. For the outside ones, about half of the width of one side of the top face.

Once marked up with masking tape, it was all done with a hacksaw and some sandpaper while sitting out on the lawn in a picnic chair, with a glass or two of Prosecco for the VE day celebration. I could probably do a neater job if I really tried, but I'm happy enough with the results for now :)

As for the holes in the carpets, they're still there but now there's good old gaffer tape underneath them so they're really not obvious any more either ?

A rather busy day here on the 2Work driveway.

Removing more parts and packaging them up in response to PMs.

Whilst I was doing all things A2 I decided to do some tinkering:

1. Got the Dremel out and cut a hole in the headlight switch trim to fully fit the auto light icon ring along with an aluminium ring. A job I’ve put off for a couple of years now. The Dremel did slip a few times so had to repaint the whole thing with Lidl Matt Black paint. Looks very good and didn’t forget to mask over the brightness icon. The angle of the auto light switch isn’t perfect but should be easy to line it up much better if not perfect over the next few days.

2. Swapped the failing P CCCU (boot light constantly on so removed the bulbs but still getting a flat battery in a day or 2) for an AF CCCU. Hopefully that will cure the current draw and I am able to start the car in the morning.

3. With the CCCU replaced and boot light working correctly I finished off the second boot light installation. Much brighter regardless of where you place stuff in the boot. Very happy with the outcome.

4. Done some messing about with VCDS whilst coding the AF CCCU and managed to programme an 8E0 837 220 E new style key fob (found it in the bottom of the spares box and not 100% where it came from) to the new CCCU. Being rather happy with myself I also tackled removing the immobiliser transponder from the original fob without breaking it. Horrible job getting the original key apart, that said the transponder is now in its new home in the 220 E key fob.

Busy day...

Kind regards,

Tom

@2work Tom If you want the auto light switch to light the tell tale for the rear fog and have not already you could take a look at what I did to modify my auto light switch here.

I do remember reading your thread regards the tell tale illumination which was something I was going to do.

A week after contributing to your thread I set out to do the work and noticed that the Bluetooth Auto Light Switch I have came with the correct tell tale illumination already. It correctly show the front and rear fog lights on.

The Bluetooth unit is also very easy to ‘fine tune’ the ambient light auto on function to match that of the auto dimming rear view mirror which comes on separately with its own ambient light sensor. I remember trying to do it with the older auto light version I had a few years ago, very clumsy approach by having twist the dial 3 times but never really got it to perfectly match the rear view mirror.

The work you done on your switch though is fantastic and I was about to do it until I found out there was no need. There was me thinking my MOT tester was not being thorough when he probably was as the switch was illuminating correctly and I didn’t even know it.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning Johny,

The unit I have isn’t that one from Amazon. I purchased it on the usual auction site but as it was so long ago I’m unable to show you the complete listing.

Here is a screen show which is the best I can do for now.

Next job is to extend the sensor cable so I can place the ambient light sensor closer the auto dimming rear view mirror, probably unnecessary but keeps me busy.

Kind regards,

Tom

Yes looks the same but of course the item on Amazon isn’t Bluetooth capable. If you so t wish to fine tune the auto on/off setting to look to work in unison with an auto dimming rear view mirror your link should be ok.

The most important thing to understand is, does the unit show the correct illumination for when the front and/or rear fog lights are selected.

The MOT testable fog light illumination is correct on my Bluetooth unit. Just unfortunate that the same seller isn’t selling the same unit I purchased a few years ago.

Hopefully someone who has more recently purchased said product can share a link to a known correct tell tale illumination to satisfy any MOT station.

Try searching Amazon for EL9 Headlight. More expensive but it’s what you’re after. I can not vouch for the correct fog light tell tale illumination though.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom.
My MOT tester asked about the replacement switch when I first had an MOT with it in, he's the wife's cousin or sumat like that and I've known him for years, after explaining to him about the switch, he just shrugged his shoulders and said."ok, no problem".

Here is the link to the same seller that I purchased mine from, just a revised listing. So should have the same correct fog light illumination.

Kind regards,

Tom

Cheers Tom.
When I clicked on the link it takes me to my ebay account and low and behold, hes the the same guy I bought my other two from
So can you alter the settings through the bluetooth app Tom?

Yes through App you can fine tune/adjust all the settings at 1% increments. So much more intuitive than twisting the dial to store a setting.

It’s much better priced than the amazon item I linked earlier.

Kind regards,

Today i covered the whole floor and wheel arches of my A2 with sound deadening and refitted the interior

What did you use? I had a Mondeo previously and used thick self-adhesive panels inside the door skins, on arches, floor etc and it made a big difference. The Audi TDI I now have sounds quite noisy in c
omparsion.

I'm just getting used to having a rather cute Audi A2 on my drive. I bought it yesterday as I needed a replacement car in a hurry to get to work. It's not perfect. Lots of things to do, but none are too taxing or expensive I hope.

So, today has mainly been making a list day.

1. Front brake discs were mentioned on its MOT and I do value good brakes. So I spied someone selling some Brembos on Ebay that he'd purchased but not installed before he sold the car. Also pads to go with them.

2. replaced the 15 Amp fuse that took out the accessories plug and left me with no SatNav.

3. tried to work out why the gear linkage was so terrible when I bought it but seems to be improving.

4. originally thought of replacing the radio but it actually sounds very good.

5. paint lacquer coat is peeling away in a few places. I know it won't rust but a solution would be good.

6. tyres are legal but not really a brand I'd like. Much expense. Stick with 205/40 R17 or switch to more sensible tyres of a smaller size.

7. worried that he seems to have a wild mix of every car scent device around the car ?

8. trying to work out where all the standard bits are inside the engine bay. Air filter, fuel filter, cabin air filter, oil filter. I can see the gear linkage if I do need to readjust it.

9. Walking up to it after a supermarket shop and thinking it looks rather good for a 16 year old car.

10. Thinking of all the ways I can spend money and make it 'better'

Hi julesw,

Air filter is under front bumper/enginetray on the right, cabin filter is under the glovebox no need to remove glovebox though..

Oil filter is the round black cap with a nut shape on the top at the front of the engine,
Fuel filter is located underneath near the n/s rear wheel covered by a alloy plate/ shield

Ps if you need info use google with a2oc first in search field?

Welcome along. A wealth of information on here but as already been pointed out the search on the forum is poor especially when searching for three letter words or less. Eg ECU or EGR
So best to use google. Start with A2OC then add whatever you are searching for. A2OC egr Will bring up lots of threads on egr valves etc etc
Also well worth paying the two quid to upgrade to marketplace where you will find lots of A2 related parts for sale at well below eBay prices

I also remanufacture some key components examples wiper arms and door check straps to better than original Audi specifications and also provide a range of 3D printed parts to help keep these wee aluminium chariots on the road

Beware though these are rather addictive little cars and like an A2 mate or two ?

Cheers. Paul

Welcome along, and prepare to be bewitched by your A2!
Google A2oc gearchange and you will find advice on how to do it. You need a 5mm drill or nail!
Theres a wealth of info on here, and if you are stuck, just ask. Someone will advise!
