Project: Anti-roll-bar for the front axis. Discussion!

hi chubby,

in what way do these kits make a difference?

cammy
I thought I had replied to this,anyway.....

There is no drift from rear and corners far quicker.
I can just leave the cruise on and sail round the corners on my trip home from work,I cant without this kit.

Anything more specific or if anyone wants a shot up here send a PM

To put it another way an anti-toll bar stiffens up the spring when cornering ,without stiffening up the spring when you are travelling in a straight (ish) line. Whereas fitting stiffer springs stiffens the ride whether cornering or not.

The A2 already has an anti-roll bar on the front. But as usual it is designed for normal road use. More "sporty" driving needs stiffer springs when cornering.

The rear of the A2 does not have a separate anti-roll bar as such, but effectively it does because the whole rear axle acts as an anti-roll bar by flexing when cornering.

So so if you want better handling when cornering fairly hard, then an updated anti-roll bar will improve cornering and reduce body roll. (Without stiffening the normal ride by much)

If you don't plan to corner hard then the standard one is probably ok for you.

I've been out today on some well-known roads and the car is transformed. I've also just driven a section of them in a 6000km old Leon ST.

They're the roads up from Uusikylä towards Ruuhijärvi and Vierumäki. They are tight, uneven, in places beautifully sighted and generally virtually traffic-free. However, you must be prepared to jam on the anchors at any point, because - like this morning - it could be two 60 ton trucks in supersize coming towards you.

The Leon was a test drive. I've recently driven a bunch of challenging roads several times to and from the M40 to Coventry via Bretford, Princethorpe and Gaydon to limit my exposure to traffic, in both an i30 and a Focus. I've also recently driven a C4, a 2.0TDI DSG A3 Sportback - disappointed it only hit 215km/h - , a Fabia 1.2 TSI, a 500L and various other rental cars in various countries across Europe. Oh, and 6000km in a Transit to Budapest and back.

I understand what I want and it's simple; I don't like over-light steering (hello 500l!), I want some interaction (hello Focus!) and I like the car to feel like it's working with the road.

The Leon was pretty good. Quiet on the main road and then over the twisties, along with some evil compressions and dips, it just dealt with it. You felt something had happened, but the dimensions of that dip in the road were simply not noticeable.

The A2? Wow, what an improvement. Where previously I'd felt the crash - and even today I found myself bracing for a thud that didn't happen - I feel the wheels dropping into the hole and then coming out again. Cornering speeds are so much higher it's manic. From 50 to 75+, easily. One particular one is an evil, tightening uphill bend and the combo simply ate it up at 80.
I'll get better fuel numbers out of this change, because I don't need to slow down (as much) for corners. The open stuff - the limit is sight and the relatively low speed limit. It's not about the car any more. Last time I drove this in April, it was wet and I really felt the need to keep speeds down. Now? Game on!

For me, the bar has helped to transform the car. I have a lot less slack in the steering - even without changing the rear axle bushes - and roundabouts and low-speed junctions where I'm expecting the car to not follow the line I have prescribed are now eliminated. That's the ARB's doing. I didn't even realise I wasn't expecting the car to follow until today...

One corner earlier today also really surprised me; I remember doing something very similar with the old 17"s on, and getting an ESP light. Now? No, it just goes around. The tyres make noise, that's obvious, but it really does just go. The dampers do their part but the bar makes the whole car hang together as a whole in a way I haven't experienced before.

Looking forward to Icetrack with this combination!

Hi people if you want to take up this offer for the H&R stability kit -front and rear heavy duty anti roll bars then let A2-D2 know via private message very soon as the offer closes at the end of the month. I'm so happy more have been made as vonnie wants a set after trying an a2 fitted with them. Cheers Mike. Ps price is good

I'm in. At least for one set. Now, which car to fit them to?!

I think the car with oss is the one to go for. If the bodywork and interior is good then everything else can be fixed. Do you plan to sell the red TDI?

That's the plan, Steve, but I have a few things to sort on the OSS car first as you know. I originally thought that the red car would be up for sale pretty much straightaway. I need service and cambelt, undertray, mooing and alignment on the OSS car before I'll start to be in love it (and the red one is much quicker as well), so I guess I'll have the two for at least a couple of months ...

p.s. thanks for the grab handle. just the job.

Hello friends,

i just want to keep you guys up to date.

I did a little misstake. As i told you some posts before, im able to order small batches of ARB-kits at H&R, but i forgot to think about the conditions. The price of 345EUR i told you guys is given at the moment, but i have to order 20 kits from H&R to hold this price.

At the moment, 11 kits were ordered by sending me your delivery addresses. 2 more people requested some informations from me and might join the order. Five kits are already payed.

What happens next?

Its still planned to keep the order open till end of july. In the first week of august, i have to see how many peoples ordered kits and how many peoples payed their bills. Than, we have the following options:

1. If there is enough money for 20 or more kits on my bank account, ill place a order at H&R.

2. If there is not enough money for 20 or more kits on my bank account, i will keep the order phase open a bit longer until i have collected money for 20 kits. A bit longer maybe means until middle or end of august.

What happens, when the extended order phase will not end in 20 or more kits?

In this case, i have to request a new price from H&R for the smaller quantity of kits. If H&R communicates me a higher price per kit, i will ask each of you guys, if you are willing to remargin. Then we have to see what will happen.

Please note: Ill not order at H&R until i have enough money to pay the bills.

Remember: In any case, you will get your ARB kits OR your money back.

yes the kits are the same for all variants--not sure 1.2 ti though. The link steaman posted when i looked does not post to the uk and its dearer. A2-D2 put a lot of trust and time offering us the deal the first time and now again for the second time. So if your interested get a PM off to him quick smart.
Cheers mike

Drove this again today, this time in our virtually new Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost with 195/50R15s on. The difference to the A2 in terms of roll is massive. Damping is so much stiffer on the A2 that when the going gets tough, the Fiesta loses out on speed carried through the corner. That's of no real consequence here because we're not timing and anyway the turbo gives it far more kick out of corners, but it's valid all the same. When it gets really difficult, the Fi just sort of floats a little, just when you need that bit of feedback, and here the A2 delivers in spades right now. I'm more impressed now than I was before. Especially the lack of roll in the A2 leads passengers to believe you're not going anywhere near as fast as you are :D

The Fiesta is more comfortable and surprised me several times over bumps where the ride was far smoother than expected. It's a decent-enough car (otherwise we wouldn't have bought it) but the A2 runs rings around it right now on the fast windy stuff.

NEWS UPDATE:

At the moment, i have concrete requests for 16 kits.
Till now, 11 persons payed the bills.
I await paymant from 5 persons in the next week, because they joined the order recently.
One person is still unsure and he was in vacation in july. Awaiting hes decision soon.

This means: The order phase is open till 31.8.2015. If <20 people signed the order till this date, ill ask H&R for a new price.

If >=20 people signed the order before 31.8.2015, i will close the order phase immediate. Once i have money on my bank account for 20 kits, ill place the order at H&R.

Make some promotion to reach 20 kits. :)

Wish I could justify this right now...
What's the approximate cost of fitting if not DIY'ing?

I am really tempted.
I always felt that the handling could be improved. I had the suspension kit installed in 2014 and it did improve the ride.
I read somewhere that the bushes on the OEM ARB could perish after few years.
I have been driving mine for nearly 12 years and I would need to be sure before committing to installing this kit.

Over to the experts...wink, wink Tony @A2Cars.

Cheers

17 signed, 13 payed, countdown is running.

Captain059: Dont think about it, just do it! Be No. 18. You will not regret. :)

Purchasing the roll bar kit could literally a once in a lifetime opportunity. It may already be too late but I'd recommend that anyone 'hovering' get in touch with A2-D2 and order and pay for a kit ASAP.
Even if funds aren't available to have it fitted immediately, just hang it up on the bedroom wall till they are (this would only apply to unmarried club members)

Also, hats off to A2-D2 for organising this with H&R.
The logistics must be a nightmare so if you make the commitment, please don't let him down at the last minute as he is putting a lot of trust in everyone.

Cheers Spike
