Air con not working - conflicting advice from Awesome / Stealth / Skipton Autos...

Dear Lord that's a big job isn't it! Glad to hear it's fixed. Getting that done at a garage would probably cost thousands in labour!
Starting to think my idea of a dash swap is a bit barmy now!

Hats off to you for all your work and in fixing the problem but i have to ask, as much as i love air conditioning.... were you not tempted to just open the windows in the warm weather?

Excellent work, it takes a lot of care to take it off and put it all back together! Luckily, I remembered to tape up the steering angle sensor so it centred when I put it back (I also marked everything that rotates before I took it off). And very well done to do a write up! Hope you have a fault free car for years to come!

I've been doing that for two summers now :( In reality it was the constant chuntering of the central flap motor that was getting to me (and everyone else who rode in the car) - it sounded like it was hunting for a happy position but never found it.

It was also a good way of avoiding the relatives over christmas... ;)

Wow! ..... don't you just hope that your A2 just keeps going .... and going, without ever getting that type of problem? It is like hoping that you'll never be told that you've got Cancer! UGH, doesn't bear thinking about!

David

Do you remember me saying this?

Well, I went to my Doctor's today .... NO! I haven't got CANCER! But, I HAVE got a defunct air-con system! DAMB! There is absolutely no cooling! I have (1), tried swapping the complete control unit, and (2), checked the compressor, as per Mike (Skipton)'s instructions. Well, compressor is O.K. and so is the control unit. I have contacted a local Air-Con expert, but he is incredibly busy and hasn't come back to me, yet. Now what I need is someone "nearby" with VAG-Com facilities? I need to have a scan for fault codes .... Is there anyone able to help me, please? I will still travel, of course .... I'm near Prestatyn, in glorious, beautiful, calm and peaceful, North Wales. Hospitality is truly magnificent here, with such a warm and friendly greeting ( plus refreshments).... do you think that there's a hint or too, here? LOL!

David

If it does come back as the a/c positioning motors, then speak with Vince at Stealth - he's found a way to replace at least one of the motors (V68 I think) without taking the dash apart - A2OC member fhl used them for this.
(although having done the job myself, I can't see how you could do this without tiny z-shaped wrists... :) )

Russ ..... have you got VAG-com? You are pretty near to me .... I go to Manchester frequently ....

David

No sorry I don't. I kindly ask Skipton who's only a few miles away from me in Mossley - he's a busy man though so it depends how free he is!

Jesus! Is the climate now cool?

Just had mine re-gassed and it's OK, but not as good as my Caddy van. I'm wondering if I have a similar issue?!

The Audi magazine (Summer) arrived today. There was a card in it for a full Air conditioning service for £79! I spoke to a Technician about the problems that I'm having. He said that they will do a full diagnostics check, first, and take it from there. The cost? Free Of Charge! When? Well, tomorrow! Oh, the Dealership? Cheshire Oaks Audi! So, maybe it does only require a re-gas? That £79 includes a re-gas, and the offer is including V.A.T. Maybe tomorrow could be my lucky day?

David

Well, after 1 1/2 hrs of FREE diagnostic work (thank you so much, Cheshire Oaks Audi!), it would appear the the problem with my air-conditioning is a temperature sender G263, part number 4B0820539, cost about £20. It was giving a temperature of -6 deg, which was causing the compressor to shut-down. The total cost for them to replace this part was £127.63, but because it doesn't need a re-gas in fitting, the Service Manager thought that I should be able to replace it myself. He also thought that I may have dislodged a wire when I have had the glove-box out, recently? They also checked the refrigerant level and it was fine .... no need for a re-charge! I ordered the part anyway, just so that "Cheshire Oaks Audi" would be getting SOMETHING out of it! Oh well, it is looking like today WAS my lucky day!

David

As Dan has said in the above post, replacement of this part is a dash out job - so if Cheshire Oaks Audi are prepared to replace at £127.63 fixed cost, then I think I'd be booking it in with them.

Cheers

Jeff

Well, I was told that it was easy to access and is just behind the glove box! They wouldn't have been quoting just £127, if that wasn't the case, surely? I do see what you are saying by looking back over this thread, but where does the information about having to take the whole dash out, originate from? Could this be incorrect? I wonder if someone could elaborate, please? I DO have their quote, right in front of me!

Sorry David.....You're wrong......but go ahead and disprove the rest of us who have already changed the evaporator sensor

If you do your research you'll find that for left hookers it's possible to replace without dash removal - however with a RHD A2 doesn't give you room to perform this due to the A/C.
The dealer will have looked at the technical drawings for a LHD.

Cheers

Well, he was the "all knowing" and ultra-helpful service MANAGER, no less! I really liked the Guy! He even went away (for a fair while) to make sure that re-gassing was not necessary) Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that YOU are wrong ... I just don't know for definite, myself? Have you not read the comment (From Tom, I think) that "Stealth" may have a way to replace something to do with the air-con, WITHOUT dash removal? I wonder if you are 100% sure about that G263 component? I wonder what would happen if I agree to "Cheshire Oaks Audi's" quote, they start the work and then realise their error? What happens next? I really need to know the way forward from here?

David

Even on an LHD car, changing the motors is a royal pain in the rear. I've done one of mine - I have small hands, I know the car, had advice on how *exactly* to position the motor and I still got it wrong first time in. I also had signs on my hands that I'd done it for a week. If Vince and the boys know what they're doing (and I suspect they do), then they may well have a secret shortcut which works if you do specific things.
With this in mind, there's no way on this earth Audi will let their techs go through it. They'll spec the removal as it's easier and probably faster, not to mention doesn't require bodging. First time I did the V70 took me two hours. Second time about the same. This is on an LHD car, where it's easier! I'd bet the dash removal isn't much slower for me if I have the space.

Regassing is not necessary, you're not touching the cooling system, just the bits that direct air around.

Thanks for your input .... BUT, you have not answered my query ... I wonder what would happen if I agree to "Cheshire Oaks Audi's" quote, they start the work and then realise their error? What happens next? I wonder if you can help with this, please? What DO you think would happen?
