Air con not working - conflicting advice from Awesome / Stealth / Skipton Autos...

Hi David,

It's certainly not my aim to stress you out.

I've provided some output from my scan results to let you see what VCDS (and the diagnostic VAG machine) will give you.
It's just for your info so you can see what fault codes might be being logged.

This was for you to compare against the scan the dealer performed - so you'd see if there was a reason why they had ordered an incorrect sensor.

However, I'm not sure why the dealership would run a full diagnostic scan and not provide you with the output - as this is their evidence that work needs to be carried out.
Then, once the work is done they should run a scan to show the faults have been cleared and have not returned.

Anyway - hope it gets sorted.

Cheers

Jeff

David I don't think anyone's aiming to stress you out - far from it - we just don't want to see you spending the best part of £200 and it not actually be the solution to your problem...
Always get a copy of the error code scans so you can interpret them for your self, that's good advice.

Yes, sorry if I was a bit terse .... with all the calls to the Audi Dealership, and the "will-they --- won't-they?" I was probably a bit "wound-up" .... It seemed that you were trying to put the kibosh on things! But I know that you weren't .... you were just trying to be helpful! Oh well, what I could do is to ask for a print-out of the error codes BEFORE they start work on Wednesday (but they have told me that they cleared a considerable number on their first examination .... Maybe I'd be missing a few?) I am just going to hope that "everything comes up roses!" and my car's A1 (well, it's an A2, not an "A1"!) LOL! That Service Manager seems to be 100% genuine and a fair man, too! Thank you for showing concern and for your help in this matter ...

David

David,

I have a "thick skin"....so no worries - "water off a duck's back" as the saying goes.

And Dan is correct, just trying to ensure you don't spend money unnecessarily.

I guess my other concern, which I was trying to put in to your mind, was, would you be happy with someone else removing your dashboard and replacing it all correctly, and in exactly the same condition?
This wouldn't probably be an issue for many, but as you've done plenty of work on your car, and know how the dash comes out and goes back in, I thought you might feel less comfortable that you'll only be charged for about 30 minutes labour - therefore you might expect the job to be rushed.
Hopefully the Service Manager comes up trumps and you'll get the job done spot-on.

As for getting the error codes before any work gets done on Wednesday, that's a good idea.

Most of the HVAC sensor errors will clear, and stay clear for a period of time, so if I were you I'd be looking to get a re-scan done after perhaps 1 week, just for peace of mind that the issue has been resolved.
Obviously you should be able to determine if the climate control "feels" right.

Cheers

Jeff

David,

Below is another scan from my car showing more errors for the HVAC, so you can see the difference between each sensor's fault code:

I was at "Stealth" yesterday .... He scanned my car for all faults. The three faults found were 01272, 00600 and 00818. "Cheshire Oaks Audi" are about to replace part G263, I understand that the other fault codes are linked to G263 and will clear on its replacement .... is that correct? Thanks for your help!

David

That for me is a definite "it's the G263".
If I were you I'd see if you can sit and watch them do the job - to make sure they take the dash out and swap that little blighter!

You are not allowed into the service area .... "Health And Safety", etc.! Look, if it works fine when I get it back, the "sorted"! LOL! Should I worry? Job done!

Hi David,

You are asking about 3 fault codes.

Did you read my post in your other thread (post link below), as I've detailed how you might check what each DTC means?

Let me know if my post wasn't clear and I'll offer further assistance as needed.

Cheers

two of the codes are flap related. A forum member just recently removed the dash to replace the flap motor. The good news it, while you're there with the flap, G263 is right there for replacement.

Lost track of how many times it has been mentioned by me, spike and others. If G263 is faulty, the two wires are directly accessible from one of the connectors at the climate control panel. The reading is resistance in ohm, it changes according to temperature. The range of values is listed in the workshop manual and it doesn't take much effort to test that sensor before taking the dash out. I had that error code and my G263 was not faulty, my compressor was dead instead.

I went to "Cheshire Oaks Audi" today .... My Lady, "Yanny" had also booked her A2 in for an M.O.T. Cycled to Chester (8 miles) and spent all day there. Back to "Cheshire Oaks" . The Service Manager comes over to me .... "You were right, the dash DOES have to come out!" Well, Surprise, surprise! Apparently, I had agreed to leave the car with them for an extra day. Fair enough .... So I'm shown that the work-sheet, and it is indicating £127 cost, including VAT. In front of both of us, again I am told, that is what I will be paying! I asked that, whist the dash is out, then they WILL make absolutely sure that all problems are fixed, before replacing it (like, another full scan) "Yes, of course", I'm told! ..... I think that I will be able to sleep easily tonight .....

David

Sounds like they are a good bunch there. Many others would have either aborted the job or charged you the extra.

We're not there .... YET! I hope that I've got good news for you, tomorrow! Thank you for your concern!

David

well, looks like the service manager is true to his words, which is very good. If you get G263 fixed and also the flap motors all done for £127 then you will have the bargain repair of the year!

I'm still "on" for it, but I got a call at 2:30 P.M., from "Cheshire Oaks Audi", to the effect that they hadn't finished the work and "didn't want to rush it" So it is on to tomorrow! The more that I'm "put-out", then the more likely the £127 cost is looking! I am still confident, even though they seem to be spending hours and hours on my A2!

David

Well, Good news, bad news! Let's start with the good news! I went to collect the car this morning ..... they have had it 3 days! Yes, I was charged only £126.49, as was agreed! (I had received a call from the Service Manager at 5 P.M. last night to say that it had been tested and that all would be ready for today) Well, taking your advice, I had asked for a log of all the fault codes still evident, after their work, but they hadn't done that ... I was told that it would be on their computor and that they would send me a copy. I paid the Bill and went to the car .... I turn the key .... (no, the car didn't blow-up! LOL) There is a warning light on ... "air-bag!" It goes back in to the service area. There is a fault with the angle sensor! (I have just replaced it and "Stealth" calibrated it!) There were no faults showing and certainly no "air-bag" warning light! Heavens, just what is going on? I just don't seem to be lucky, do I? Anyway, they have kept the car on safety grounds and they took me home .... Now, whilst they were checking-out this latest problem, I asked them for a print-out of the Diagnosis log .... it ran to 8 pages! Alarmingly, one of the faults is :-

600 - Potentiometer - positioning motor - for temperature flap - G92
30 - Open circuit/short circuit to B+

Hey, they were supposed to have fixed all this, weren't they? I had said, when I had been talking to the Manager, "you WILL check everything (flaps, etc,), BEFORE replacing the dash?" So it had certainly occurred to me! I shudder to think that the dash might have to come out AGAIN! No, don't go there! Please put my mind at rest, Guys .... this is really starting to get to me!

"Cheshire Oaks" are half-saying that this angle-sensor problem is their fault, but I wonder about that. It HAS been "messed-with", recently? BUT, it did appear to have been fixed, though?
What about this 8-page Diagnosis log? A lot of "German" language on the left .... hard to understand, generally .... not at all like VCDS ... no simple and obvious fault codes .... "can of worms"? Looking through that log, there are a few instances of "open circuit" and "implausible signal" ?
I am NOT going to let this get me down, honest!

David

David when you do a scan they just read the codes. Unless they clear the codes after scanning they will remain there for all time.

So if they have not cleared them like I suspect then they could be old codes. So I am sure they have done what they say they have.

cheers

David.

This is why you want a full copy of VAG-COM, then you can do this yourself and know for sure what's occurring..
