Aluminium Fatigue

Good for you Seamaster - name and applaud this dealer for us.

If anyone else is having trouble sorting the repairs out, please get in touch with me asap - I have assurances from the top that the repairs WILL be done, FOC.

Cheers,

Mike

PS Please get in touch with me even if you've already done so, but are still to have a repair sorted.

I went to my local Audi dealer this morning with a 4mm crack in each front door, I gave them the code relating to the fault found on this web site.

A technician looked at the car and told the service personnel that the car requires two new doors, the car is now booked in for three weeks time subject to conformation that the doors are a warranty claim.

So thanks everyone for all the info on this subject.

You will find that it wont come to doors replaced as they said that for mine but it got the hinge kit fitted

I will be happy either way, new doors or hinges, when the technician told me I needed new doors I almost argued, but thought better of it

I went to Poole Audi, my local dealer, a very good dealer if I might say so.;)

does anyone know if the dealer looses out in any way on this? Im just wondering why the reluctance to get the job done.

I think its a can't be bothered as they may only get a couple in they just think if they say NO enough you will go away. But guess what we don't and with the help of this forum they get a big NO WE'RE NOT GOING AWAY back at them oh and it helps when Mike has word in the right ears aswell

I was told today that I would be getting the hinge kit and not new doors, I`m ok with that.

Just trying to get my hinges sorted but my local dealer has said that it is not covered as the car has had a service outside the network, even though I have recently bought the car as an approved Audi form an Audi dealer!! (Carlisle don't recommend them and not my local either) the car is a 2004.

I bought my car from a motor home dealer, it has not passed through an Audi workshop in four years, and at no point did Poole Audi ask me about service history. I went in to Poole Audi armed with the details and relevant codes from this thread, I gave a copy to the service desk person and said words along the line of: " I have a problem with my doors in that they are cracked and I understand that this is covered under the 12 year anti perforation warranty, please can you make the relevant arrangements to have this work done". After a flurry of activity and inspection a service personnel told the service desk person that the car needed new doors and it was covered under warranty.

My point being is that I gave them all the information they needed (from this thread) and gave them very little space to move.

This is the bulletin in full:

Routine durability monitoring by Audi AG has identified a minor cosmetic flaw in the door
hinge of the Audi A2 (model year 2000-2005).
It has been discovered that the hinge can be susceptible to cracks on the outer non-structural
skin. To some customers this may lead to concern that the structural integrity has been
compromised – this is not the case.
Should you receive any customer enquiries relating to this characteristic please advise them that
extensive testing of affected hinges by Audi AG has confirmed that their performance and longevity
are in no way reduced by these surface cracks.
Replacement doors have been modified since September 2007.
Audi AG have produced a Technical Problem Solution (TPL) which has been published on ELSA -
TPL number 2016707/1. This TPL includes details of how to claim the cost of the repair. Please
note that all vehicles are covered - even if out of warranty - and so customers should not be
charged.

The two part numbers currently unavailable are the kits 8Z0 898 021 and 8Z0 898
022. Please postpone all repairs until all the parts are available. The other parts required are:
• 8Z0 837 349C
• 8Z0 837 350C
• 8Z0 868 243
• DA 001 730 A2
• D 001 001
• D 009 401 04
• N 903 675 03
• N 101 154 04
• 8Z0 898 021 (currently unavailable)
• 8Z0 898 022 (currently unavailable)
As soon as all parts are in stock we will issue a further announcement.

Please note the section I have underlined!

Cheers,

Mike

This is the info I printed off and gave to the service desk person

Hi Mike

Yes it doesn't matter about the service history or warranty as mine had only had its first service service done at Audi then second at indepenent, but they didn't even ask about that. But i will say it did take Mike to get involved to get it sorted, so keep pushing them

Phil

Good news, After a firm but polite call to Audi customer services pointing out that I had bought an "Approved used Audi" and that I have had issues with other items from day 1 , I got a call back today confirming that although Audi AG would not cover the hinges Audi UK will stand the repair:) . Just waiting for the parts to arrive at the dealer. just goes to show nice but firm seems to still work :D

Nice for all of you that you have the support of your local Audi branch. Sadly the A2 was never sold in Romania, so my little gem will never have it's hinges fixed.:(

I had the new hinges and the repair kit fitted yesterday by Poole Audi, I no longer have a rubber on metal squeak coming from the doors which I had before the repair (which I didn’t notice until it was no longer there!).
So Thanks to Mike, the people on this web site and Poole Audi, who looked after me really well.

Great that you're sorted and a happy bunny!

Thanks must also go to Audi UK for their continued support in this matter.

Cheers,

Mike

Sorry for the question, but there are 44 pages to this thread :)

Can someone please point me in the right direction on which post clearly describes this hinge failure. I've checked mine and all looks ok, but I just want to be sure I've understood it correctly.

Thanks.

ps. planes are made from aluminium and it's been a few years since one fell out of the sky due to fatigue. So it's more about design with the material in mind rather than the material itself.

Hello,

I understand that you'd like to be kept upto date with the door hinge issue.

I'm going to speak to my dealership again on Monday, greatly prepared with what I've found on A20C. My A2 is booked in for the next day, for two days, with courtesy car. I'm just waiting for confirmation that there will be no charges.

Bye for now.

I finally got round to having the cracks sorted. Both sides need doing. It was pretty painless at Ipswich Audi.

I took it in for its free MoT on Saturday morning (passed :)) and got them to check the hinge area straight afterwards. Initially I was told that, as the car was out of warranty, I would have to pay. I (calmly & politely) pointed out that it should be covered. The service manager said she'd check with Audi's Warranty Dept. She initially thought it would need to go to the body shop.

She got back to me today to say it would be covered in full, so it's going to be done next week FOC and I'll get a courtesy car for the day.

It doesn't have to go to the body shop after all and can be done on site at Ipswich Audi. I guess that's because no paint is involved - they just bond on the reinforcement cover thingy after popping off the doors. I wouldn't be surprised if they drill little holes at the end of the cracks to make sure they don't spread. Not that they seem to IME.

I too have been 'authorised' for repair.
Tamworth Audi has finally book my car in after initially seeing the fault over a month ago.
So hopefully after next week my missus's A2 will be sorted too.

Regards
Tony
