Hi,

That price was for the plated steel ones. Are the cast ones interchangeable? If so ill price them also.

Thanks

Dropping subframe out; piece of cake.

Getting subframe locating screws in place aaaagh! ?

Are the fixings for the subframe stretch bolts too?

Today I replaced my pressed steel arms with some cast ones - had none of the stripped thread issues that Phil had although undoing two of the sub-frame bolts did release some water trapped in the frame. One tip for others also planning this job is to make sure you clean and lube the frame holes before putting the alignment pins in - they can be the devil to pull out of the frame to then put the relevant bolt in.

Difficult to tell how bad the old arms were really - obviously a lot of surface rust but also when you tipped them up big lumps of rust were rattling about inside.

Simon.

Had my press steel arms replaced with Lemforder cast iron ones at Audi VW Centre in Melksham Cost £147 for labour and 2 hub nuts. They did not change the console bolts as they said they have never changed them before on A2s or on Polos which are the same design.

Here's some pictures of the old ones. Look like I could have got a couple of more years life out of them but given the state of Wiltshire's roads and bad rust could be hidden inside the pressed steel ones, then better sooner that too late. Can now sleep easy ;)

Haven't figured out how to resize with this new web site - seems it's full size or thumbnail.

Cheers Guys for clearing that up!!

RRP on the cast arms is £433.00 for the pair,i can do them to anyone interested for £396.00 posted.

Thanks

Has anyone got the part number(s?) for the four bolts that hold the front subframe to the chassis? I can't find the relevant page on 7zap.

Yes. First thoughts were the start of a failing wheel bearing, which I really can’t be arsed with, but it might be the arms causing.
That’s the noise, like a failing bearing however it is road noise. Been on a second test drive. On a road with a variable surface I could almost play a tune with it. Cast are better on motorways though, somehow more stable.

The part numbers I have for the bolts are:

N10628601 for the “console” to body bolts
N10492102 for the subframe bolts
N10640301 for the long wishbone bolt

They are on 7zap but not where you expect them, they are in the steering rack diagram I think, from memory.

The above numbers are the ones I used when I did the job and they were the right ones for the 1.6.

Didn't notice any change in road noise when I did mine and I'm usually sensitive to that sort of thing - I'll have another listen tomorrow though. Can't think what would cause it other than the front bush not being in the right place - was the tracking still spot on?

The old sub-frame position was locked before removal but I had many issues with the old being solid with salt deposits. One bolt dumped water on me and the other three were solid with a water soluble white paste. I cleaned each out and secured the position. Both consuls were scraped due to thread corrosion and I bought new. The new sub frame took some cajoling into position but I hope and think the position pegs held. One peg jacked the floating locking plate and it had to be retrieved from within the chassis using a magnet.

The car ran true with the steering wheel central afterwards. I had a mate with me on the test drive who thought the car was great, he suggested I had become familiar with better cars while working on the A2? Perhaps but I do know my cars and this one has improved on motorways and is noisy over rough road surfaces.

Tracking is yet to be checked but it will be done.

Phil

I didn’t really drive this car much before doing the arms but one of my other motors is a cabrio and very noisy, the other is double glazed :)

4 online diagrams seem to cover most of the parts - but confusingly the info is spread across the first three, and combined in the last one but missing crucial bolt / nut details or has links to other diagrams that don't work when you click on them.
