How do you remove the open sky blinds?

Hi all,

I noticed in thread a while ago that some owners have removed the blinds from their open sky system (can't find which thread). This seems like really good idea and I'd like to do it. However upon inspection of the blind system it seems to me that its all kinda embedded within the interior trim (apart from the sliding blind that is).

So my question is how do you remove it all? Is it complicated, does it require special tools etc etc...

cheers

Hi Alexm,

All you need is a flat-bladed screwdriver and patience!

Firstly, open the roof with the blind closed and push in the little black clips which hold the sliding part in the grooves. Start off with the front two, then pull the sliding part forwards and do the back two. Then remove the sliding part of the screen.

The next step requires a firm, but gentle touch! Using the screwdriver (or even a paint scraper if you have one, the flatter and wider the better) pry apart the aluminium frame from the fabric roof panel. Do this from inside the car and work around the frame until all the clips are free (there are about 10 in total).

Then, go back outside the car and remove the frame through the open roof.

Job done!

Thanks very much Skipton. Guess I will have to be really careful, don't want to damage the interior.

Cheers,

there is a knack to removing the clips around the screen, you'll need to insert the blade between the headlining and the silver plastic of the surround, and locte the clips, there's quite a few!!

then, rather than trying to prise off the screen, you need to open the clips, by inserting the blade into the clip, and bending it slightly to ease it open. I've attached a pic of one of the clips in my car, also don't forget the clips stay in the car, they don't come out with the blind. once you get the hang of opening the clips, rather than trying to prise off the screen, its alot easier!!!! :D

No probs.

If anyone is thinking about removing the sunscreen, here is a before and after...

Superb Information

Well it’s a big THANK YOU to Skipton, TallPaul and Alexm for asking the question.
My first job for the weekend was to remove the sunblind and thanks to these Excellent directions it was easy-peasy. The first clip was the worst, but as soon as I nailed that and understood how it all worked, 10 mins and it was out!

My biggest problem was getting it through my loft hatch for safe storage

If you are wondering if you should do it - just do it, you won't be disappointed. It brightens up the interior and you get the full benefit of the double opening glass panels - it's great, stop reading this, get your flat blade screwdriver out and do it!!!!

Thanks again Guys – this really is a wonderful forum with loads of splendid details and information.

Finally got round to removing my blinds. WOW what a difference!!! The car really is alot lighter, and when the roof is back the opening is now much bigger. The opensky feels more like opensky!!! :D

I found that if I popped the clips on the corner of the front section, from the outside with a flat blade screw driver in meant that I didn't press on the interior tim and mark it. I then found that by merely applying pressure to the frame with my hand, working along from the dislodged clips, popped the others. Did it all in less than 10mins with no marks to the blind or the interior.

If you've got opensky I'd definately recommend doing it. Thanks to Skipton, TallPaul and SubNose for the advice!! :)

It can be put back in even easier than removing it.
Position it back in place & go round, clipping it back on. Then insert the movable part of the screen.
Simple as..:)

Yes I can vouch for that, before I removed the whole thing I popped a couple of clips and then pushed the frame back into place. It clipped back in perfectly without a mark. :)

open sky is great. I was lucky it was part of the extras on the car i bought second hand from the VW dealership

Just did it today!

It is great. Best thing to do if you have Open Sky System! Thanks for the info guys. I loaded this page up onto the PSP and then took it out to the car and the instructions worked a treat. It took about 10 minutes to have the confidence to pop the first clip. Then they all came off fine.

Has anyone noticed any difference in road noise or temperature with the blind off?

Just removed the blind from my car, really glad i've plucked up the courage to do it. I know it's already been said, but it does make a difference, I can't believe how much lighter it looks inside :D

Does it make the car more of a greenhouse effect? Still haven't got round to this yet, need to clean my screens if nothing else as they are minging dirty!

Got round to de-meshing my opensky today. Took me exactly 7 minutes to do it. Unfortunately, one of the plastic fins that used to be held in those metal clips broke off. Well, 9 left...
It's a whole new roof, but i'm expecting hot times ahead.:)

re. "i'm expecting hot times ahead"

Being a member of the 'follically challenged' tribe is the main reason I'm going to keep my mesh!
