My 'not meant to be a project', project

I think you will have problems getting the lacquer to 'key' to the aluminium, you normally etch prime aluminium, then paint, the lacquer
The etch primer 'keys' to the aluminium which is the bit that you would be missing

Yes

That might be an issue, but there are plenty of things that have a brushed aluminium finish and so there must surely be a way to achieve it??

Does it need to be annodised perhaps?

I've had a look into preserving the brushed finish and a clear coat laquer should suffice.......i've got a spare bonnet here...hmmmm I wonder how that would look in brushed aluminium to match the wheels??

anodising would certainly allow the lacquer to key, I work in the Aircraft manufacturing industry and all aluminium is anodised prior to priming and paining. Local s scratches ect are touched up with alocrome prior to prime and paint.
The thing is both of these treatment will alter the appearance of the aluminium that you are trying to preserve

I fear that lacquer directly on the aluminium will not adhere and it will simply form a 'skin' that will quickly fail, let water in and the aluminium will corrode under the lacquer

I think you may very well be right.

Ive had another go tonight and although I can get a lovely brushed finish, its oxidising instantly.

I really wanted that finish but I may have to have a plain silver painted finish with laquer instead :-(

The DIY refurb of the wheels is coming along well but is slow going. Currently using a wire cleaner head on a drill to remove all old paint and imperfections before a little bit of metal filler on a few imperfections. Will then start building up the layers of primer but may have to wait for the weather to get a bit warmer for the colour coat to be applied.

first trial fit tonight, sorry the photo is sideways. Looks like im going to be able to make these fit by cutting away a little of the inner arch liner.

All ready for a final wet sand and then laquer. Not a professional finish but they look good and I didn't have the money spare for them to be powder coated. I've shaved back some rear arch liners in preperation and can't wait to get them fitted.

Looking good.

Can't wait to see them on.

Hope they clear ok. They should but there is only one way to find out for sure.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. It took a bit of a leap of faith to get them as I had to buy the wheels and the tyres without knowing for sure that they would fit.

My A2 won't appeal to everyone, especially those who prefer the factory look but I think thats the great thing about the A2, no two are the same.

I'll get some more photos up soon.

ps Paul, I think you've secured a very nice A2 yourself from what I can gather.
