Project peperami - (A2Steve)

I think it’s down to individual choice, that’s why some people love the little alloy critter we all have, and some people like Corsa’s and Saxo’s
On the BMW front, I’ve now driven the 120 petrol BMW I’ve got as a courtesy car about 50 miles, and the list of things I detest about grows by the mile.
Handbrake lever hard to reach due to the massive centre arm rest is well up the list, as are the sports seats which give me backache after 20 miles, and don’t get me started on the nav system. Shiny interior trim which is angled just right to reflect lights from kerbside buildings causing massive distractions. The only plus I’ve found is the accelerator pedal, which is highly reminiscent of an original VW Beetle.
Kleynie presumably loves his BMW, but he probably had a decent test drive and liked what he experienced, and each to their own I say! Enjoy your car, Kleynie, but a BMW is definitely not for me.

That's a very nice colour Steve, well done!

Would like a proper set of pictures though, to do it justice.

Sarge

There you go Sarge. Not by any means finished yet though.

To do

- sort out headlight condensation
- bumper grilles in gloss black
- coilovers
- wide wheels
- cream interior
- cream TT leather front seats

But money will be the limiting factor :)

Looking lovely.
Are you going to repaint the air intakes to get rid of the metallic blue surrounds?

Probably not. My wife hates them but they match the blue H&R anti roll bars that can be seen as well. The intercooler pipes will also be the same colour in time. They hint at something a bit different under the bonnet :)

Nice flip of orange in there, looks to be a good finish too judging by your close up and absence of swirl marks.

Nice to see individual A2s in amongst stock cars, and this one is individual under the bonnet too. Enjoy your new toy Steve; I'd be protecting that nice paint job from road salt with some mud flaps if it were me. :)

Looks superb Steve, the colours really popping nicely in the sun and looks like a great job done. Those blue trumpets don't look good they look completely out of place like they belong to a scene from Star Wars "The Empire strikes back", the bar scene of one of the strange creatures in the bar. :p https://youtu.be/vDpDhofRoXA

Better to get rid of them so she's a wolf in sheep clothing, "a Q car" is the ultimate complement, and just suprise the potential wannabes who think it's just an A2.

‘A ‘Q’ car’ - is this a reference to Q ships? Naval merchantmen with hidden armament to surprise pirate raiders? Well played Vorsprung.

Well it looks like I'm back to square one with the clutch issue.

The reviews of the Techniclutch unit are abysmal. Stories of them not even being close to fitting and terrible customer service thereafter, so that's out of the window.

So I'm now left with a lovely powerful engine that pulls like a tank all of the way through the rev range, can spin the front wheels in 3rd gear.....but no way of actually using that power. If I put the accelerator pedal even half way down in 3rd or 4th I can feel clutch slip and that's on an 18 month old clutch.

So the search continues. Sachs do performance clutches that can handle 30% more power but I'm running around 50% more power.

Here lies the limiting factor of tuning a 3 pot TDI by the looks of it.

I went through this exact issue a few years back when I was changing the clutch for the third time. I kind of hinted at the Techniclutch not being a promising solution when you mentioned it a few pages back, mainly due to their description of the product as being suited to both 75 and 90 PS versions, which physically, they're not.

I've even looked into 1.9TDi clutches, but to no avail. It looks like the A2 clutch, as with so many other items, is unique and not interchangeable with other VAG parts, and the numbers are so low in terms of volume, that no aftermarket manufacturer will produce a suitable item.

And for info, as has been documented on these pages (it's ten years ago now - how time flies), my A2 Tank, is running (or was when last measured) 131.22bhp at the flywheel and the torque was 364Nm. It's no real wonder that Tank eats clutches and flywheels!!

Hi Steve, may be worth trying to contact larkspeed performance centre, I looked into their ungraded clutch kits a while back, they sell one from DriveTorque they have a stage 3 clutch kit which states a better clamp load etc. Here’s their contact number 0113 2643231 or on eBay item number 121629846275

Could you help me out with the figures above Mike. This is the print out for the car at Stealth. It's showing 2 figures 148.8 and 133.5. Is this at the flywheel and the wheel?

What was your conclusion on the Sachs performance clutch kit?

It looks as though the way to power on an A2 TDI would be a 1.9 TDI engine conversion.

That's a good call there Ross

That would solve the clutch slip issue. Now for a stronger flywheel lol

Didn't you say earlier that when you got the car, it had been de-tuned to 130-odd BHP to save the flywheel? It's probably this that you're seeing reported. Transmission losses are usually more than 15 horses.

I agree, for the ultimate in performance, a 1.9 TDi conversion would be the way to go. However, costs would be astronomical and at a time when diesel is slowly being outlawed in the UK, it's not really worthwhile.

That makes sense. The 2 figures are likely to be 2 different map results then.

De-tuning to save the flywheel didn't work though did it :)
