Today I.....

Conversation with the wife on the way home from the Chinese last night;

Wife: Why is there a light flashing in your foot-well?
Me: Oh that's the OBD unit.
Wife: What does OBD stand for?
Me: On Board Diagnostics.
Wife: On Board Dynamite Sticks - why have you got those!
Me: :D

Simon.

Today I...

1. Attempted to improve the gearshift of my A2 with not much success. Too much free play at the gearbox linkages.

2. Identified a location of an oil leak. What that oil leak is, I don't know. And it doesn't look good.

3. Adjusted the service flap to become flush with the bonnet.

I agree with Depronman regarding 5mm bit, BUT on your video, you haven't secured the linkage in position by twisting the plastic ring. The spring is compressed on that part, on the other one is correctly securing the linkage.

Boris

Was just about to mention about the plastic ring, well spotted Boris. You need to twist it so it springs (parden the punt) back into position

In the video, both springs are compressed and the L-shaped locking pin (2 in Figure 1) is in locked position. By doing so, movement of the gearbox selector lever (16 in Figure 2) should very minimal, unlike what is demonstrated in the video. The play can also be seen on the slide block (17 in Figure 2).

Correct me if I'm wrong.

In addition to what the others have said, it also looks as though the tower bearing has broken up. In your video the shaft has sideways play, it should only rotate.
The bearing is easy to replace, and provided the shaft is not corroded will massively improve your gear change action.

I suggest using a vacuum to clean up the loose rubber and dirt from around the gearstick, this can get into the base of the mechanism and make the movement notchy.

My thoughts, exactly. The shaft is somewhat eccentric when rotated. That, and the fact that the weight of the selector lever pushing downwards with gravity. Hence, the "resting" position of the gear stick is either on the 1-2 gate or 3-4 gate, where ever it is left at. Do correct me if I'm wrong. Would love to have the gear stick resting at 3-4 gate again!

...managed to repair the high level stop light cover on my brother in law's Saab. Paul
(depronman) kindly supplied 3D printed clips that needed only a bit of sanding to provide a key before
glueing.
Thanks Paul, excellent quality as usual.

Great that an A2 designed part with only a little alteration is now on a Saab. I don't think there was ever a collaboration between Saab and the VAG
