Today I.....

I don’t find the A2 sport seats particularly comfortable on a long journey either.
I guess it all depends how we’re built, I really like all the A2 seats. I’ve got std SE CS seats to sports and sports with electric lumbar and heating. All good for long distance.

Fixed the saggy nets top draw string on my new set of seats . Hand washed the nets as they were of need of a clean

Cut the 2 plastic welds on the right hand side circled in red . Used a trim tool to push out the rear tabs to gain access to the metal retaining pin on the draw string. Pulled through with needle nose pliers from the side then down the the lower weld and pulled through and tied in a knot. Tension now restored

Today I finished my first cambelt change!

Gave it a clean as it was a bit of a mess, (photos before and after) and also did the water pump, tensioner, v belt and tensioner, thermostat and coolant temp sensor as it was running cool on the way home.

According to the service history, the belt had not been changed since 2007, but the old belt looked in excellent shape, no cracking and not much wear, so I suspect it must’ve been changed but somehow missed in the service history, though that’s a bit odd as the previous owner got it serviced regularly and filed all the invoices and mot certificates.

For anyone else contemplating it, it took me a few days as I was going slowly and doing it all by the book, (there’s a fair amount of disassembly required) but the cambelt change itself was pretty foolproof with the correct locking tools, as long as you follow the steps in the workshop manual I struggle to see how it could be done wrong. I also had access to a lift which is very helpful but not essential.

This was my dads 2001 TDI, I will be attempting the same on my new FSI soon.

Drove down and left my daughter’s FSI with Adam @Kleynie who worked his magic and replaced the OSS, all done in a highly professional and enthusiastic manner, and quicker than expected. It was such a pleasure to drive home in the afternoon sun with the OSS open, this after spending just long enough at Brooklands Museum which was well worth the journey in itself. Many thanks to Adam for the lifts there and back too.

Today I, well yesterday actually, we drove to Grange Over Sands from Blackpool for the day. 31 miles as the crow flies but 64 via M6 and A roads. My wife drove and complained about the gear change and revs also lack of power. She is used to the 4 cylinder 1.9 TDI with 130 bhp. I did go through the difference between the A2 & A4 to help her with the difference in the revs & torque for the gear change.
She said that the A4 is like a very good, well trained pedigree Labrador whereas the A2 is like a very good pedigree cat.
I can go with that.

Anyway what animal is your A2?

Well, it wasn't today but the other day.
Left my house at 6am in Surrey (Warlingham) and went to take back a clutch to Rimmer Brothers for my Rover 800 Coupe I bought back in Feb this year, but olnly fitted in July - Wrong one....
The Red Arrows home is nearby at RAF Waddington, so had a stop off as they were practicing.
Then went to see a friend in Doncaster I made when I went to a very good (and very Famous) friends funeral earlier this year. Spent some time there, then came back via another Rover 800 owner in Lakenheath to pick up some stuff, then back home.

470 miles in all.
Longest I have driven my A2 since owning it.
A)It is now an absolute pleasure to drive now it has no wheel bearing noise.
However...
B) It is not as pleasurable to drive as the 800 long distance. I have struggled to get my seat position correct since I have had the A2. The seat squab doesn't come far enough forward, or correct angle for me and I find the back of my legs needing more support. Anyone else have this? I'm not overly tall, 5'10"

Still a good drive though.
Seats are no problem for me at 6'1". But having said that, when I've driven other A2s (WOM courtesy cars) they've not quite been the same. Mine are standard seats I think.

This is awesome - one day I’ll do this job myself too.

Totally agree @stevec , just wish people would give their car a wash and vacuum before trying to sell it!!!!!
I always do. It's the small things that sometimes help to sell a car, and it shows that it has been cared and looked after.
Besides you never know what your going to find with a good clean. On my daughters new 2nd hand car, i found important documents under the front seat that showed the previous owners current address, bank details and telephone number!

Today I removed the light switch & climate control panel (the climate panel put up a good fight) to get it out but the info on here helped as usual. Now posted off for refurbishment.

A little sado but got great satisfaction cleaning out the fins of the small fan at the back of the climate panel. 20 years of dust.

Hello all,

Today I… Replaced the rear springs on a certain JR A2:

I’m sure you can guess which is the extremely tired pair and which is the fresh new pair. The ride is vastly improved and very happy with a having the tools out for an hour or so.

Kind regards,

Tom

They may now be tired, but I don’t think they were ever the same free length.
Mac.

Hi Mac,

Agree Sir, I personally think the removed springs are of a lowered type length. Glad to now have matching (to the front) SE type length variants fitted. It’s surprising the difference that such a quick task with little financial outlay can achieve.

Kind regards,

Tom
It does look "right" now, better than right, actually.
Mac.

Thurs really but just drove my blue 90 from Perth up through Blairgowrie and up to Aberdeen. I took the original 6 spokes off to get refurbished and popped these 5 spokes on. I think they might stay on despite my thoughts of keeping this one standard. Lovely country roads rather than going dual carriageway through Dundee.

Feeling blessed

G
