White dials instrument cluster!

I have just seen a "white dials" instrument cluster on Ebay, item no. 321012342846. (I wonder if when you are read reading this and then turn up this item, could you attach it to this thread so that others can simply open it, please, because I'm not sure how to do that, sorry?) It is listed as Audi part number 8L0920980N .... I am a huge fan of white dials and would dearly love to have this type of display in my A2! I have just fitted a DIS cluster, so it would be highly impractical to fit this item, even if it was DIS! BUT, I so like its appearance! It has left me "drooling"! LOL! I never knew you could get white dials! O.K., you experts .... any way to go "white"? ..... Any way to just get the white dials?

Hi David,

Simply highlight the web address, copy it, and paste it into your text... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321012342846

As it happens, I think the eBay listing is erroneous. I don't think these instruments would fit in an A2. Compare with this:

Loud Chris ordered a set of custom dial backgrounds using the latest Audi font from a specialist company, though he never fitted them and then sold them when he got rid of his A2. I know they're in the hands of a fellow member, but whether that member knows which company fab'ed them is another matter.
I'd get in touch with Chris. It might be worth establishing whether that company are able to make a set of white dials for you to fit into your existing cluster.

Cheers,

Tom

That listing is very misleading - is it just for the white dial graphics? Or the actual cluster? No way would an A2 cluster fit an S3!

Thanks so much, Tom .... so very helpful, as you always are! Now, the DIS cluster I've just fitted has some damage to the general forward area (excluding the dials) It is not too bad, but I thought to cover it with some grey material (like a carbon-fibre effect) Any supplier/ideas on that one?

David

Well, it is full DIS! Manufactured by VDO. It doesn't look too unlike an A2's cluster to me? I suppose it's like finding a pair of fantastic shoes .... if they don't fit you, then you just have to forget them! I suppose that I've got it in me to make a hybrid out of this and my own DIS cluster, swapping the dials and clocks around, but haven't I got enough to do as it is? I do love the appearance, though ....

David

The instruments are not compatible, too, ranges are wrong, warning symbols, etc. (so to build a hybrid is out!) Lockwood don't seem to do white A2 dials for the A2.... a difficult one, this .... custom dials can be £50-£60, anyway. Google search doesn't seem to turn anything up. think I'd pay £50, though ....

David

David,

For info, loudchris bought his dials from the following company in Germany:

http://k-tec-carconcepts.de/_english/speedodials.html

I bought them from him earlier in the year, but haven't got around to fitting them, and I'm now not sure if I'll bother.
If I remember correctly Chris paid around £80 for the dials and I bought them for £50.

They're not white, so won't be of any use to you, but I'm sure you'll find something on the above web site.

I hope this helps

Cheers

Thanks Jeff! It's looking promising .... the site lists the A2 and even shows a white-dial version .... although the rev counter does go up to 7500 RPM! LOL! I'll see what they have tomorrow .... I'm wondering what is so special about the custom dials that you have, via loudchris? I feel that being white is the real "eyecatcher"? They must have been different, to have attracted "loudchris's (and your) attention?

David

As mentioned previously, the dials which Loud Chris sold had the newer Audi font for all the lettering/numbering, etc. They were black though, not white.

Tom

Well, you didn't mention that, Tom (about them being BLACK) .... and you knew that I was interested in WHITE dials .... so you raised my hopes just a little, there! But, no problem ... I still appreciate the interest that you show, to all!

David

Hi David,

They are different, but perhaps not different enough, although looking again at them today I do quite like them.
They have the updated Audi warning display icons as well as the newer style font. Perhaps I would have liked them a little more if the Km/h numerals were in red.
You'll notice they are in 2 parts. The rev counter is seperate from the rest.

These are what I have:

I have just spoken to "Clive" at Lockwood .... very interesting, and a very helpful man! Now, they can make a one-off white dial display for £185 + V.A.T.! I understand that it would be of the highest quality, polycarbonate, fade and warp free ..... just like the O.E.M. version! He informs me that they are pretty easy to install, too! The warning symbols are more obvious, highlighted in a thin, black outline. Wow, do I so want this item! ( I go to Europe quite often, and those "K.P.H." reading should be a bit clearer) Now, here's the incredible part! ..... The cost goes down, down, down with the number manufactured/ordered! SO, for 15 off, it's £48 INC. V.A.T.! And for 6, it would be £90! Look, even I, eccentric as I am, wouldn't go to £200+, but I'm game for somewhere lower! You know what I'm saying ...... any interest to share an order with me, please? The greater the number, the lower the price!

David

Would they all have to be in white, or could they be done in the soul black finish but just updated with the newer Audi fonts and warning symbols? My DIS cluster has a scratched marked area above the DIS screen which is a bit annoying! I wouldn't be keen on white dials, but the idea of refreshing the whole look of the cluster, and also being able to clean up this scratch mark at the same time, does have some appeal...

I can't understand this ..... what do you gain if they are in black? The standard dials are already black? No, to be made as a batch, they all have to be the same, of course. He says that there is little extra work in producing a quantity .... the greatest labour content is the preparation! I'm thinking that, once again, I'm in the minority in liking white dials! .... I just LOVE them!
