Mine's 2001 on 51 plate. I guess if we get into emissions trouble next year we'll all be up at your MoT man if he'll do 3.5 !Interesting because my mot man looked up the figure for me when my A2 was mot’ed a couple of months ago. And for the age and no plate found said it was 3.5. Maybe younger a2’s Dropped to the 3 limit. Mine is a 2001 my
Cheers. Paul
Congrats on completing the job, but your final comment worries me. I'm gathering the bits to do exactly that, plus new dampers. I guess I'll just have to grit my teeth and get on with it. Did you have any problems getting the drive shafts out of the hubs? That's the step that is concerning me, and getting access to the strut top nuts.Today me and Adam changed the lower control arms, bushes, struts top mounts and droplinks. Complete b*****d of a job but managed to keep our fingers, just! I do not recommend a DIY on this at all.

All the best,

PS OSS still working like a dream

So the lesson I've learned here is get someone else, ideally equipped with a f-off large press, to fit the bushes to the consoles. We changed the dampers as well to Bilstien B4’s. We did not remove the drive shafts, you don’t need to. Once the strut is out you can tie the hub up out of the way which obviously lifts the drive shaft as well. The hard bit was replacing the wishbone, they are so hard to get into the new bushes on the console.
You have to allow two long days for this job, we started on Friday afternoon and finished this evening.
Hi Merlin,So the lesson I've learned here is get someone else, ideally equipped with a f-off large press, to fit the bushes to the consoles.
Unfortunately, my plan is to fit new wheel bearings while I'm at it, so I'll have to figure out some means of extracting the drive shafts. I know someone else on the forum (apologies, can't remember who) was saying recently that they took the hub carrier/drive shaft out as a unit. Maybe I should just plan to take this to the same large press.
All useful stuff. Thanks everyone.

Good to hear this works. Clearly, this should be my Plan A. Thanks for the tip.Hi Merlin,
For my front bearings
I found a 4lb club hammer & an old/cheap
1/2” drive extension 10”long proved ideal,
Leave the old nut on to protect the shaft threads (loosened off) a few sharp blows freed both sides which were original fit & Audi locking paste.
Useful hint stand with back to car wing & hit bar squarely, very awkward trying to do facing car.
PPE : leather gloves & goggles minimum.
Hope this helps.
Keith.
We bought the proper VAG tool to wind the bushes in and out, this was actually very easy.Oh yes did the wishbones the other week,. took the same, a couple of days, I used a big clamp to push them out and lots and lots of grease to wiggle the new ones into the bushes. In no rush to do it again.
I found a G-clamp is useful to press them into the right position.Bushes are easy with tool, but trying to push wishbones into them whilst on car, not nice. Lol.
Not really, I found something like this works fine:Have to be a huge gclamp, I didn’t have one that long.. used grease and wiggle
