Today I.....

Today I, swapped my wing mirrors for heated ones.

However, you get what you pay for. I bought both sides new, for £26.50 (both, delivered), which I thought was a bargain. www.europartsdealer.co.uk

Fast delivery, and they are for Audi A2

However, they don't have the black plastic border of the originals (does that matter......), the Drivers side blind spot zone is a bit larger than the original (which does not seem to matter in use), and the passenger side rubs on the wing mirror casing just a little.
Photos attached.

Great to have the wires already there, and the plugs fitting etc.

They do get warm, very quickly, so all in all, a working solution, but not as good as the genuine parts (new or 2nd hand).

For such an item, as long as they don't pop off unexpectedly, this is cheap and quick and may well just do the job. Let's see........

Awaiting your conclusion ... Could be a great way to get heated mirrors for a reasonable price.

Can't say I enjoyed taking the mirror back off, without the plastic border. However, it came off successfully.

It's all glued on well, so I think it may be too difficult to take it apart, for the benefit of the old glass. Also, my original mirrors also looked like the black backing (not the plastic mounting) was also well stuck. Both are likely to avoid separation should the glass crack.

Still a mid-level solution, for a low price. Others can have a play if they are keen.....

For what it’s worth, I’ve just removed what I now know to be a non oem heated mirror. I can only assume it was fitted to replace a broken OEM one as that’s what’s on tother side, meaning it’s older than the one I replaced. The NON OEM one had weathered really badly and started to delaminate. Obviously no idea if this compares with the one you’ve bought but keeping your existing mirror is a sensible fall back plan for sure 👍

Check out this Top Gear Car of the Year of 30 years video guys! My previous car the 1.7 Puma is on it, and a nice surprise too, if you didn't know about it 🥹

Swapped the check straps for both front doors. Now lovely and very non-crunchy again! Old ones were looking a little ground down, shall we say.

According to this post, each heated mirror contains a bimetallic switch so that the mirror only heats up when the exterior temperature is below 8C or so. Sounds like your non-oem mirrors don't have the thermostat. However, I believe they are only on when the rear windows heater is on.

Edit: later comment in the above post say A2's don't have the bimetallic switch. So juries out!

Yep. They go on with the heated rear window. Not sure about anything else (being 27 degrees today!)

That will be fine for me, but will be interested to see what happens in a few months.
I can’t imagine they would have built any tech into the mirror, when it already exists as part of the main car systems which are already monitoring such aspects.

I’ll report back when it gets cold……

I’ve just fitted. Set of heated mirrors to my own A2 and there is a round part about 15mm diameter and 12 mm tall. I suspect that is the thermostat
But the comments are correct about the mirrors only being powered when the heated window is on which is some 10 mins max

My cheapies don’t appear to have the thermostat.
Back to ‘you get what you pay for’ here.
Cheap, but only work with heated rear window.

That’s fine for me, but I do live in the South……

The round thing is a thermostat, to stop the mirrors overheating. It breaks the circuit at 25 degrees C, give or take whatever tolerance it was made with. Anything beneath that, they'll work when you activate the heated rear window, until the back of the glass reaches 25 degrees. The ones @timmus and I tested out of the freezer on my FSI on a cooler day this summer certainly worked.

Today I had a mess around with some masking tape and paint
Still to be gloss laquered, but think I will do another to match for Jelly!

Afternoon Bob,

Great work Sir. I’ve always considered this look to be good. I did go to purchase some years ago from BK Twin I think it was but they are no mi her trading.

Here’s what they used to offer, which I’m sure were fitted ti Steve’s Project at some point:

Maybe a task for one of our 3D printed experts.

Kind regards,
