Today I.....

.. became a flasher without a dirty Mac - it was my newly-cleaned PC instead. Uploaded Paul's dual map - process took around 4 minutes in total and was completely painless.

Then the acid test .. it started first time. Went for a 10 mile drive watching the temperatures - after about 3 miles (the car had been driven not long previously) the car obviously hit the critical temperature to invoke the enhanced map because 2nd and 3rd pulling away from a corner were markedly more pokey and pulled hard right up to the red line. Calculated torque peak hits ~187-190lb/ft from what I could see, up from 155 (calculated) on the normal map. Hugely impressed - well done Paul!

Many thanks Robin, another happy 'Depronman remap' user.
I remapped Pinky's yesterday and it found out the rather worn clutch, the clutch slip are not noticeable until about 2500 rmp in 2nd and 3rd gear, at which point the rev counter needed made a bid for the red line. The poor old clutch at 214K miles just could not cope with my remap.
It was due a clutch anyway, now just a little more urgent

Cheers,
Paul

Couple of other observations. I was surprised at how much smoother the 3-4000rpm range felt because normally the noise and vibration levels actively encourage you to change gear fairly promptly once you get much beyond the 2000s - effectively the usable performance rev range has broadened from the usual 2200-2800 range (standard) up another 6-700rpm or so, and I was not really realising I needed to change until it was obvious the rev counter was in an area I'm not used to. You notice a slightly more aggressive chirp of the turbo sound overlaid into the engine note. Thinking back I also noticed subconciously (to begin with) that the rev counter was spinning round a bit quicker as it obviously is - but it isn't aggressively boosty in the way 80s turbo motors were. It's basically my A2 tdi exactly as it was, but a bit more so (if that makes sense?).

you are correct Robin in all that you have written, when I did the remap I was not interested in a really aggressive turbo kick, my aim was to get as smooth a power delivery as the original but with more power and torque on tap - I think I achieved it :)
You will also notice that it will pull from lower in the rev range, effectively the torque limit map id now wider and flatter and taller than the std map

Enjoy the power :)

... because I was too chicken myself. Completely pain-free. I had been thinking the clutch was on it's last legs anyway so it was an expected issue - now I'm driving like a wee old lady but good to know the power's there when my new clutch is in.

Got underneath the front yesterday and put a in repair to reattach the OS corner of the undertray to the rest of it. The first car in ages that I've been able to drive straight up on to ramps without bridging the incline first!

Unfortunately now noticed that both the plastic sills have holes from attempted jacking at the front. I hope there's no damage underneath.

Today I fitted new rear springs and rubber spring mounts. Simple job, 30 minutes but pleasantly pleased with the positive benefits. Rear ride hight sorted, grunching noise on speed humps gone and better stability in cornering. Happy days.

had a look at my fuel filter after Paul suggested I check it out

2002 Tdi so some dubiety about which kind I need - full cartridge type it seems.

Does this look like it’s less than six months old? Previous garage did a ‘Big’ service in November...

If it helps, I haven’t been driving through puddles of sulfuric acid

Question is what else didn't they do - air filter, oil filter, and did they just suck most of the oil out and replace with cheapo fresh....

Simon.

Let the missus drive the A2 home from Taunton. Got to just before our turn off on m4, when bam. She asked me what was that. I replied that's the sound of a new windscreen. Bye bye genuine windscreen.

I'm going to tend to think... none of it. Bought new filters today.

that is certainly the older filter, I new it would be on an 02, the 03 was the change over year :)
I would say that was lasy changed 16 years ago not 6 months ago, as Simon as stated so what else did they charge you for and didn't do !!!

I so like doing it myself and knowing it is done right
