Today I.....

Today I was nearly rammed off dual carriageway at high speed by a car moving out from slow lane. Ironically I was already on my way to A&E! Happy ending - Son’s arm not broken, my fabulous car not needlessly destroyed and a sneaky narrow end parking space waiting for an A2 near the hospital entrance ?

Changed my pressed steel arms for cast iron ones today https://www.a2oc.net/community/inde...ront-suspension-arms-people.31963/post-313400 Also cambelt change including water pump and tensioners and a MOT. Ouch! An expensive day - is my A2 now worth £1,000 more ;)

MOT smoke reading was 0.93. Under the new regs effective 20 May 2018, pass for first used before July 2008 is 3.0 for a diesel turbo (so well within); first used on or after 1 July 2008 it's 1.5 and first used on or after 1 January 2014 it's 0.7.

Alan. Thanks for the new mot smoke figures. Good to see that our A2 are WELL within the limits. Certainly no need to use the scrap page scheme

Yesterday I fitted the passenger headlight I bought from @A2Steve to replace the previous browning & clouding one. It even came with all the bulbs still in it, just had to replace the LED sidelight with the bulb from the previous unit to match the drivers side. I also swapped the differing rubber surrounds over to keep the match, although the older style one doesn't stay attached properly underneath the newer unit. Actually having a back cover on the new light was also an improvement over the previous one, no wonder there were dead insects inside it!

Today I took the passenger headlight back out again, cleaned the area under the rubber seal and used some body moulding tape to attach it on the underside, and now the light fits properly into the corner of the wing. While I was at it I took out the driver's side headlight - aaaarrgh the wiring plug! At least I now know the right tool to get it to unclip in that tight space. I put the black box (levelling motor?) back on its mount, covered over the hole where one of the locating lugs was missing and, unlike the last person to open it up, put the wire clip back across the cover!

Unfortunately I then failed miserably to get the wiper arm off to replace it with the aero one I also bought from @A2Steve, it just wouldn't budge off the big spindle! So I couldn't even get to the smaller one. At least I have a hook mount aero blade on it, and it has the plastic box to keep the rivets off the screen. That should also no longer touch the screen after some judicious bending of the arm, at least for a while.

Took it out for a short spin - would you believe, I had to do 3 overtakes from 35mph in 5 miles of good roads in 50mph/NSL areas? It feels so willing and lively, and that's *before* the remap I've arranged with @depronman! Very nimble also, it handles like a go-cart :) Happy happy!

I had a similar issue when taking one off recently, the usual technique is before starting the operation, put wiper into "upright" position, which involves a bit of judicious and carefully timed turning off of ignition with the wiper going. Unfortunately the car I was removing it from had no electrics, so I ended up managing to undo top bolt, then using lots of WD40 working the wiper mechanism backwards and forwards until I managed to get the bolt to slip enough to get so it was in the upright position. It took about 5 times as long as it should have done, but I got there eventually :)

I've removed a LOT of wiper arms in my time and have never had to use a puller etc on it. Let the wiper raise enough to expose both of the mounting points and then put the arm into the upright location. This will relieve tension on the nuts. Undo both nuts and rock the arm at the base in an up and down motion towards you i.e away from the screen and then towards it again. It will then come lose and remove quite easily.

Thumbs up Steve, this is how I have always done it, some WD40 does help. I also undo the nut a few turns but leave it in place so that if it comes off suddenly it does not do any damage to you or the car.
cheers

Thanks for the advice guys :) I'll take the new arm and the socket set with me this weekend in case I get another chance to try this. Also hoping to get out tonight or tomorrow after dark and find a nice brick wall to check the new headlight aim - 6mm hex bit at the ready.

I used plusgas releasing spray. I got a puller on eBay. Probably didn’t need it but wanted to use it - two twists and pop. (Ps I have 28 year old wiper arms to remove hence £4 well spent. )

Had my windscreen fitted today by auto windscreens all looks good at mo and it was a pilkington glass screen so should be good quality. Just started to rain so will check on car later.

Took delivery of Margery the Minger today, another one saved and this ones for my brother 130,000 TDI brought after not being used for the laser 4 years and ended up sadly at copart... so as I do brought it blind and my god this is prob the worse as in mingin filth I have ever seen on a car.. so not having an MOT couldn’t take it anywhere to get it cleaned and frankly I’d be to embarrassed to anyway here she was when she arrived..

Right so plug in VCDS only error is a dodgy abs wheel speed sensor.

Next is a new load of belts and oils and filters brakes need a service new wiper arm a wet vac and some polish and wax ho and a sensor.. then I might let the MOT tester see it ?.

The vertical position trick worked a treat to get the old wiper arm off, thanks guys. Aero arm now fitted.

Today I replaced all my cv joints. Car drives smoother but still has some shake over 50mph. It looks like the virtually new osf tyre is out of round ?
